I have received a text today asking me to urgently contact <name of debt collector>. From googling, I understand this is a debt collection agency, and putting the pieces together, I believe this relates to an outstanding balance of €79 I owe X from my last house (I've disputed this, long story).

Am I right in saying it's basically nothing to worry about as no one is going to try and take me to court for €79? I don't want to worry unduly, and I absolutely don't want to deal with this lot as from reading up on them, they sound pretty bloody unpleasant.

Firstly, If you owe money to X then you should pay that amount to X, if it is in dispute then you must keep on to them to settle the dispute.

Do not engage with these collection companies as you owe a debt to X not to the debt collector and they have no legal standing in Ireland. They could take you to court and seek a judgement but it would cost them far more than what they would get from you.

You should contact X and attempt to settle your account. If you have all your paperwork in order and can clearly show there is no debt or that it was an error or has been paid then just do nothing.
