Is there gas fueling stations near you? You should check with your insurer whether they will still offer cover with the gas conversion, some won't.

The mpg is worse with gas but the gas fuel is cheaper so with a combination of both perhaps 1/3 saving could be achieved from what you currently spend.

Between the insurance bump conversion cost and value of car you could buy a newer tdi

Underpowered engine in a big car + longish daily commute = €€€. If you're happy with the Passatt put your 700 towards taxing a 1.9tdi for the year and get rid of the one you have.

Work out how much you will save each year and see how long the pay back is.

Calculate the difference between the cost of both fuels over a year, taking the difference in mpg into account.

Find out an actual price for an install.

You say you'll keep the car three years max, at 15k km a year I'm not a million percent sure you'll be far into savings.

You gotta think of stuff like if you go on a break somewhere you gotta know where the nearest lpg station is all the time.

Work that all out and see where it leaves you.

a very quick calcuklation at 15km / yr and 1/3 saving would say you'l save 595euro per yr, so looks like a no brainer ot me if you intend on keeping the car.

700euro sound cheap fo the install tho

There's a few garages doing conversions so the competition is driving down prices.

With modern conversion rigs, the LPG fuel consumption compared to the same engine running on petrol, is about 12% higher; In some EU countries LPG is almost as mainstream as diesel, I personally drove LPG powered cars in Italy for a decade. As long as your routes take you nearby a distributing station, it's really a no-brainer - also considering that you of course keep the petrol capability, so if you run out of gas in the middle of nowhere, you can always switch to the petrol system and keep going.

Honestly, if you can pay up the price of the conversion up front, the whole "savings" calculations are unnecessary. It's a matter of practical pocket availability - yes, you spend a chunk of cash right now, but the fact you're gonna spend only 20-25 Euro/week on fuel as opposed to 40/50 (assuming a 300km/week driving distance, compatible with the 15k per year) is going to make a difference in the immediate, not in years time.

If you need to pay for the conversion monthly, then the story is different...

There's various types of LPG conversions which might differ greatly in price.

Also there is plenty of different manufacturers of conversion equipment which might differ greatly on quality and abilities.

In general then quote of €700 doesn't say anything in regards if it's very cheap or very expensive.

But some insurance companies do, you'd be seriously reducing the number of companies who would quote you and in current insurance market that wouldn't be wise.

I'd be with others here, trade the car up for a diesel.

Why would they ? It doesn't increase performance so why would they give a sh!te.

They just want to know if it is done professionally.

End of the day it's a modification and mods scare the bejasus of them. This company may not mind but some definitely do.

It's another container of dangerous fuel in the car. If the car goes on fire the risk of a big bang increases.

Would a car with lpg have to display the compressed gas and explosive stickers on the back? They are on ambulances for O2 and I see it on some cars and vans.

To be honest with you, I don't think it represents any noticable risk.

There's over 2 million vehicles (over 10%) with LPG in Poland, and I've never heard of a single case of LPG tank explosion.

They are designed to withstand huge forces during accidents.

It is much less dangerous that petrol tank...

Petrol vapours are highly explosive. It is virtually impossible to have the concentration of LPG vapours to be...
