Rattling sound from right rear of my car

    Hi Guys,

I let my car (2000 Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec S) run down very low on petrol last night after work. All the garages were closed en route home so I continued on. As I was driving the car developed a rattling sound coming from the right rear area (directly behind me) of the car. It seems to intensify briefly when I accelerate but once I'm in a comfortable gear at cruising speed it will settle down.

I filled her up today and the noise has continued all day. I must also note that he car is making this noise when sitting idle in neutral and it also intensifies even more when going into a left-turning corner. It seems to have also had an effect on the actual noise produced by the engine itself as it now sounds more like the noise a diesel engine would make.

    Any ideas?

Just paid a bomb as a first time driver to get the thing insured/taxed so I'm hoping nothing too serious...

    Cheers x

Exhaust possible or a stone stuck on or in something. Also could be rear breaks or have you checked for corrosion.

Very doubtful has anything to do with low fuel.

Loose exhaust could be possible!! Any way I could check this and would this have an effect on the sound of the engine?

I was thinking sediment from the tank could have got sucked into the fuel pump (which from what I've gathered around the web, is in the rear area of the car) when the car was low on fuel.

Also are shocks a possibility ?
