Hi all. I want to change my surname. I am not Irish but got my passport 1 year ago and want to get an Irish surname. What is the easiest route and how long would it take? I want to change it in my passport and on my drivers licence etc....

For what reason would you do this?

If you're not Irish, what passport did you get?

I would guess not of Irish descent but acquired citizenship.

    get married...?

Didn't stick for me, heh. I had just renewed my passport and got a temporary UK intercompany transfer visa the year I married my husband in Scotland while on a business trip. Just before that trip, my handbag was stolen and I had to replace all of my cards and documentation. It would have hugely complicated things for me to go change all my paperwork again after we got married, and my employer told me they wouldn't pay for a third replacement passport and visa (fair enough). The UK have the marriage certificate, of course, but we didn't try to change my name on anything there. I filed the green card paperwork for my husband under my passport name. Somewhere along the line I did take our marriage certificate to the US Social Security office and have my name officially changed to my married name there, but my married name appears on no other paperwork, including my US tax returns. I don't know whether the Irish government knows I have a married name, since all of my Irish paperwork was generated using my passport as ID. I'm not perfectly sure myself what my actual legal name is, or what I would have to do to get all my US and Irish paperwork in order under my married name. My husband is completely unconcerned about it all; his opinion on the matter is "you're married to me and part of my family no matter what your name happens to be", which is fine by me.
