    Hi all,
I had a first calver calved this morning. Good bull calf out of RIO. When I was getting him to suck I noticed one of her front quarters in her elder was hard. When I went to milk it all that came out was a little curd. No milk at all in it. I never had a young heifer get mastitis like that. Will she loose the quarter altogether? Should I give her an injection? The quarter us not hot. Any help appreciated.

There's a good chance that she will have milk in it over a few days. She might bit a bit slack in the quarter for this year.

She seems fine. Taking to the calf ok, quarter is not hot. Should I give her an antibiotic or just leave her alone?

I would if there was anything to milk. The quarter is hard with nothing coming from the tit.

She may have got summer mastitis last yr as a heifer. Ive seen it in dairy 1st calvers. Nothing u can do. It doesnt make a difference she should be well able to rear a calf on 3 spins.
