Renting a car in Spain with a Visa debit card

    Hey Peps,

Just wondering if anyone has rented a car in Spain recently with a Visa debit car, the terms and conditions on the websites seem to suggest that you need to have a Credit Card to book a car, and if you have a visa debit card they will only except this if you take out full excess insurance (which more than doubles the price).

I use AVIS 3-4 times a year in Spain. Across a few different locations. Always use my debit card with no problems.

I always take the extra insurance because they dont take / hold any deposit if you do (plus I like having the peace of mind of having it). Its about 15-20 euro a day usually.

If you dont take the insurance they will reserve whatever the excess is on the insurance. Usually about €1000.

Do you know what the excess insurance is going to cost from the budget rental companies if they accept debit cards? They usually quote low and then screw you when you show up, don't think there's a free ride here. Avis and Hertz exist because there are people who like to get a quote and know that that's all they will have to pay - no hidden extras. The budget companies also have tricks with their fuel policies which can mean that they screw you at the beginning (mandatory excess insurance) and end (refuelling charges) of your holiday.

Absolutely correct. Thats why I use AVIS. If my quote says €xxx then I know that is exactly what I will end up paying.

Also make sure you always get a discount code for any of the big companies. Never pay full price. Just google avis / hertz discount codes etc and put them in when booking.
