I think the 787 is probably as reliable as any other bird flying at the moment.

Over here in Norway there had been a lot of press regarding the many problems Norwegian had with their Dreamliner fleet. However it turns out that a lot of those issues were down to unfortunate choices by Norwegian themselves.

They opted to not to have Dreamliner-rated maintenance at OSL (their main hub), and instead put all of their eggs into a Premium Support deal with Boeing (which is great and all, but still kind of worthless if you can't get work done at your base). During that time I think they had to send their craft to AMS to avail of their Premium Support (assuming the 787 could fly at all).

The practical result of all of this was that their 787's were going tech and not getting fixed all that quickly. This resulted in PAX being heavily delayed or stranded at their destination. Since they don't have any alliance partners, they had to use a craft out of their thinly spread Dreamliner fleet to cover the tech-plane or more often, lease in LH aircraft last-minute from various players (I think 'Euro-Atlantic' was one)

Meanwhile, rival airline SAS provided Dreamliner-rated maintenance at OSL for the sake of the Qatar 787 that would make a daily visit. That apparently operated smoothly with very limited tech problems or delays.

I don't know what the situation today is with Norwegian's Dreamliners. However I am hopeful that they had learned their lesson and not cheaped out on the maintenance end of things.

Beyond silliness like that, and all of the scrutiny the 787 had gotten during its launch, I think it is safe to assume that it is now a very solid aircraft (as long as you take care of it).
