Hey guys quick q. We are sending some heifers to the mart tomorrow. There was a bullock not properly castrated with some of them. We got the vet to scan them and they wernt in calf but we injected them anyway 2days ago just in case. Do we need to declare the injection to the mart?they are all under 12 months. Trying to google it but not sure and dad doesn't remember the vet saying anything.

I know a lot of lads that do it, not a clever idea bringing a batch of steaming bulling heifers into a mart and them all coming the one day. I'd hold off another week and make sure their not wrecked looking.

What do you mean bulling?sorry to show my ignorance but would that make them start bulling?

I presume he gave them estrumate which is an injection that brings heifers in heat or aborts any incalf. Yours will be coming around tomorrow and will be rising and steaming looking if in a batch.

Crap. Just checked and its estrumate. If I'd known the name I'd have known it would bring them in heat. Too late now they are in the yard and the trailers booked. I'll know in future. We will just tell before they are sold that they were injected. Thanks it's good to know going forward.

Don't need to declare injection anyway. As regards the bulling, some of them at certain stage of their cycle should be bulling/ be in heat over weekend but others at different stages, or those who haven't started cycling yet, won't be in heat- so long story short my advice would be to sell away tmrw.

It says on the vet docket (meat withdrawal?). After I asked this q dad produced it! So I had thought anything affecting meat withdrawal would need to be declared?not sure of it thou.
I'm prob over thinking at this stage.

Meat withdrawal for Estrumate is 1 day so no worries there.

Perfect.that answers my original q. No need to declare it then and at least we can be 100% certain they aren't in calf!!thanks everyone. Now here is hoping they do well tomorrow!!

Not trying to rain on parade
But are you sure its a 100% success rate?
I have heard stories of heifers coming back in calf

Well the vet said none were in calf to begin with-we just decided to be doubly sure by injecting them. And they are separated from that little decker of a bullock for over s month so should be ok....suppose 100%is slightly asking for it but...

Think if an animal was definitely in calf (up to 4/5 months I think it was), then if she didn't come around bulling after a few days of being injected then she would be supposed to be injected again in 10 days time.
