Buying from a non main dealer

Hi all would really appreciate any advice. Looking at buying. 151 vw Passat 2.0 diesel automatic but it's being sold by a small used car dealers they don't even have a garage or anything. It's the highline spec I wanted leather with the rugrats but I'm concerned that I might be buying a pig in a poke in that where did they get it from? They said it's a demo but with over 30k km I doubt that. There's only 1 other highline automatic 151 for sale that I can see and it's €3000 more with only half leather and no sun roof similar mileage though and more I can't afford it. Not to be stereotyping but I'm more caught up with other things in the house mechanics are not my thing and I have nobody to help really. I looked at the aa pre inspection and think it's over priced. I would happily pay a decent mechanic to properly inspect if I knew one. I have recently moved mechanics they replaced the alternator in my current car do you think they would look at the car for a fee? Would appreciate any thoughts

Is it tungsten silver with a panoramic roof? 3roc cars?

Check the reg of the car.
Check if its a UK import, if it is do a check on the reg,
Does it have a service book? it should be dealer stamped for services if it does.

Check the milage on the service book, ring the dealer that did the service to verify the milage and stuff is correct and ask was the car in for anything else.
If it all checks out, the car would still have manufacturers warranty so i wouldn't be too worried myself.

Yes it's the silver one you mention do you have any thoughts on it? Anything gratefully appreciated. Thanks XsApollo don't think it's an import but never thought to look at the log book.

My uncle's old car, traded into Keary's in Cork against a 5 series about 3 weeks ago.

It's a cracking car, and a well minded one. If you want the background I can send it to you via PM. Have the full extras list for it too, it was VW serviced.

Was never a demo or anything like that, one private owner.

I couldn't understand how it ended up outside the dealer network myself tbh. Very high spec and bought before the business edition gave the pro nav too. 44.5k new. Send me a PM if you want the info.

There wasn't any. Unless the dealer used finance to buy it into stock that is.

Most BMW dealers will only retail used BMWs, the likes of Audi are the same but it's a bit odd alright why they didn't just sell it through their other franchised dealer network. That's what they did with my CC when I traded it at the time, was sold through their Nissan forecourt on the Kinsale Road. Can only imagine that they got above trade value for it from the current independant dealer selling it.

44.5k down to below 30k in 1 year is a fair whack in depreciation. Good news for the OP though.

Bought before the business edition and all that so full price paid for the pro nav and it's got the premium LED headlights and not the normal LED ones. Driven it a lot and the new Passats a cracking car.

Why did your uncle change if the passat was so good and doesn't sound like he got offered a lot for it?
    Lovely looking car.
Those new passats are the equal of a BMW 520d easily I think.

In terms of interior you are right, however the engines in the 520d is a lot better and much bigger choice of engines overall. I also think the M-Sport is way better looking than any Passat. Other thing to consider is the 5 series is end of life now so will be due a makeover in the coming year.

You would want to be careful posting that car, I'd say it would have interested a lot of people, looks like a very good price for the spec of car. Buy it quick if still interested before someone else gets there before you!!

Bmw are doing unbelievable deals on 5 series as new model launches in September.

Put it this way, if there wasn't close to 15% discount built into the trade-in value he got a bad deal.

But great value to be had on a new 5 series current model - though avoid the tourer as it has serious issues with the air suspension still.

Thats a question I asked. I think he just preferred the look of the 5er tbh, and having driven both back to back the 5er is a step up from the Passat. Both were great cars though to be fair. I gave my opinion on the change but at the end of the day it's not my decision in the end.

He didn't buy a brand new one, was a used one with a decent discount on it. He priced it against similar ones in a few dealers and this was the best deal by a long way so went with it, especially as it had 8k of extras on it too.

I reckon you've done very well there.
Very nice looking car. Well wear.

Re the 5 series, I was speaking last week to Bmw sales guy. He said they can't get over how popular the 5 still is considering a new model is only months away. According to him they can't get enough of them to sell, used especially as they walk out the door.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭GustavoFring

You've bought well, that car is a bargain. If that was in a main dealer I'd expect another 3-4k on the price. Well wear.

I can believe it. I've had one offer to buy mine already and another enquiry about letting them know when I do decide to sell it.

Sweet car, looks really great. Also will have VW warranty until 2018. Great deal and you know it was minded. Probably has a service package too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭GustavoFring

    No service package on it.

Picked up car today. Having never had a vw before so love the Passat. Feels really smooth and quiet to drive. Cant stop fiddling with gadgets I'm a total read the manual type of girl and really there is lots of functionality. It also has autoglym coating Which I am really impressed with. Final thanks guys for advice and input.
