Wifi Good on Laptop but not working on mobile devices

Got virgin media and all was good for the first two months or so. However lately the wifi has been dire using mobile devices or tablets, however it is fine on the laptop (using wifi) or indeed on my playstation (connected by ethernet).

Can anybody provide a reason why the Wifi would be absolutely terrible (to the point of hardly working at all) on a mobile device or tablet....but is working great on laptops??

Note that Virgin Media have already replaced the modem and Speed Tests do not mean anything in this case as the speed test could be great but the internet would still be absolutely dire (dial up slow or worse).

    My router is CH7465LG-VM

You shouldn't post the same item twice in the same forum - that's called spamming.

My guess is that your mobile devices have small antennae, whereas the laptop has a bigger one.

There may also be interference coming from neighbours.

VM's WiFi on most of their routers is typically poor anyway. People who want to have the full 240Mbps or 360Mbps speeds over WiFi usually put the VM thing in bridge mode and use a decent consumer router for better WiFi.

Its not spamming, I initally posted in the other thread, but realised it didn't apply to the particular modem in the title of that thread.

To keep the peace, I have deleted that post! :)

What I find strange is that it was perfect for the first few months, but your point about neighbour interference may be salient.

I didn't report you anyway, so we'll keep it between you and me! ;)

Is that modem the Compal? If so are you using the 5GHz capability? That will certainly be less affected by interference and give more consistent speeds, however it reduces the effective range, so that might not help. Also if your mobile devices are a few years old, they may not support 5GHz.

If you are only on 2.4Ghz, then interference can come from microwave ovens and other electrically "noisy" devices. However that impact would only be happening when the device is active.

If you get the inSSIDer app for your phone or laptop, you can see what other wireless networks are around you and what channels they are operating on. Then you can set your modem appropriately on the 2.4GHz range - try channel 1, 6 or 11

Have you introduced any other wireless 2.4GHz tech into the house? Weather station? Baby monitor? These may also cause interference, though other than not using them I don't know how to mitigate against them.

Yes I did introduce a weighing scales that connects to the wifi, but not sure how that would affect it. I tried disabling the 2.4ghz, however that meant my laptop couldnt find the WIFI signal.

I have heard of some badly designed/faulty products that connect to WiFi causing issues with peoples WiFi before, maybe try turning off the WiFi on the scales completely/removing the battery of the scales so that its no longer connected for a while and see if the issues continue.

Install wifi analyzer on one of the phones and see which channels are being used by the surrounding (neighbours') wifi networks, check which has the lowest activity and see if you can maybe switch to that channel on the router.

It's a useful app to have, will give you an idea of the amount of traffic around you.

Tried taking the batteries out of the scales.. so they are out for a while now and service is still poor on the phone and tablet.

    Thanks
