Watch out for turbo problems in that vintage. There's a little spongy air-filter that even main-stealers don't check at service time. It can completely dry out and screw up the turbo. Early warning signs are a lot of black smoke coming from the exhaust when accelerating hard.

That's the turbo breather filter, it can get blocked causing oil starvation in the turbo. There is a modified breather filter that needs to be fitted if not done so at this stage, it elevates the problem but still needs to be replaced every 3rd oil service.

Other known issue with that engine are the inlet manifold swirl flaps which do tend to break off inside the manifold and get sucked into the engine destroying it. Most owners replace these swirl flaps with blanks, not an expensive fix.

On the e46 its very common for cracks to form on the rear sub frame due to poor design. It will need to be replaced with a reinforced sub frame.

Also make sure the car's cooling system is working perfectly, BMWs of that vintage are known to have problematic cooling systems which can result in issues.

Just remember the last of the e46 models are now 10 years old and there are a lot of tired dogged or high mileage examples out there for sale so you need to thread very carefully when buying.
