SD card backup

Complete newbie to Android devices, and just purchased a 64-gig SD card which upon inserting, my phone formatted it then offered to 'transfer' all my data. I can't be sure, but it looks like a whole bunch of data is on it which is great, but this I was installing an app and it crashed during installation. The phone restarted and I was faced with a message about there being no SD card. I pushed the card in a little further, and rebooted a few times, and it's back, but I need a process to get around this for the inevitable moment when my SD card fails.

While it was 'invisible', all of my apps stopped working - Google Play Services, etc. I assume this is because the data for these apps is on the SD card. So if i plug in phone to my PC, and browse to the SD card, can I make a backup. And then if the card fails, I just need to get a new card and copy the contents up again? Or is my Google Backup already taking card of that?

Are there any apps I should continue to use internal storage on in case the card fails? I mean if I can't get at my podcasts, and maps and pics for a few days, it wouldn't be a disaster, but the phone seemed to quickly go very dumb without the SD card.

Just looking for some advice really.

What type of phone do you have?
Some phones will not allow all installed apps to be moved to the SD card.
Not sure why the data was invisible when s card was not being recognised. What happens when you unmount the sd card?

    It's a WileyFox Swift.

I'm not sure what that really means tbh. Is it something I can do without rooting?

You should have an option to "unmount" or eject the sd card.
Your phone "should" operate normally without the sd card - unless some of the operating system or system apps have been transferred to the sd card.
if you were able to move the apps to the sd card you should be able to move them back.
Try and see if everything has been moved to the sd card or not. This would explain the phone acting up.
