    Hi,

The sister gave me a rangemaster 55 gas cooker that she had in her shed but she cannot remember if it was butane or propane that it ran on.
    Does it make a difference?

does she remember the colour of the tank as red is propane and yellow is butane.

Butane burns hotter than propane but it's pressure drops as temperature drops so if the gas cylinder is outside your cooker can have poor power on colder days.

Propane works a lot better on colder days as its pressure does not drop like butane.

My understanding is that most of these cookers will work on either.

I prefer propane as you can get the tall red cylinder which lasts forever and works better in the winter.

Look at the regulator that goes on the cylinder and that should tell you which one it is. The Calor gas website has instructional videos about how to apply the regulator to the cylinder for Butane, Propane and Patio Gas. They'll help you out.
