    Looking to get a Nikon 17 - 55 or 24-70 f2.8 or similar.

Priced around and these lens are v expensive 2nd hand.

Nikon are offering €200 cash back at the moment so a new one seems more likely at the moment.

Anyone know where to get one at a good price ?

    I think €950-€1000 is expensive 2nd hand.

Those lens are the 'same but different' if you like, as is the price range.

17-55 one is more aimed at the cropped sensor models and the 24-70 at the full-frame.

The 17-55 f2.8 DX should be available 2nd hand for €400-500 whereas the 24-70 will be up around the €1000 mark.

If you have a cropped sensor camera then go for the 17-55. Should be able to pick one up fairly reasonable.

Just saw a tweet about one HERE today. It looks spotless.

I bought a 17-55 on Ebay. Not happy with it.

Was on a job last night and tested the lens, the images were soft( Nikon D7000). On my friends Nikon D810 they were sharp.

I'm looking at the AF fine tune at the moment, trying to see a difference.

    I'm really sorry I didn't try and get a 24-70. I think its a much better lens.

Maybe it is the camera that is causing the problem

Its a strange one. My camera seems to work fine. I did a job recently with a 24-70 f2.8 and no issues with the focus.

As mentioned it worked fine on a D810 when we did a few test shots.

I've bought another D7000 which will arrive Monday, I'll know for sure then.

The 24-70 lens seems to be a better performer from all the reviews.

It looks pricey. Thinking of getting a new lens form Jessops.

I have both lenses (for different cameras) and wouldn't find much difference between them to be honest. Very rarely use the 17-55 these days but have used it recently and it's as good as ever.
Every lens has a 'sweet spot' and it's not going to be as sharp throughout the range. The sweet spot can also vary from camera to camera.
F2.8 is rarely if ever going to be the sweet spot so try it throughout the range - f4, 5.6 and 8 would be the most common with that lens in my experience.

Try the AF Fine tuning before you go splashing out on a 24-70 as it could easily turn out to have the same problem. IMO, having used both over a number of years, the difference between the lenses is not that great at all.
