    Hi

The disc on my Humax HDR 1000S appears to have failed. I wonder has anyone here replaced their disc in this unit and if so is there a particular disc which is recommended? Can I just fit any SATA internal disc?

I'm don't really keep many recordings for very long so it doesn't have to be a super-size disc.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Yes up to 2TB any SATA drive should run without issue, when you go over this I think it needs to be specially formatted prior to installation. The Western Digital Green models are recommended for their performance and low noise. When you insert a new drive it auto recognises it as non formatted and will then format, with the previous model I think it suggested a default allocation of 20% to music/photos, best put this down to a tiny portion unless your going to use it for storing them heavily.

How sure are you it has failed? There is a known issue with some of these units where the hard drive is not recognised. It does not mean the drive has failed. A new drive will not solve this issue so it may be an unnecessary expense on you. There are multiple reports on the MyHumax forum.

    Thanks for replies.

I think it is the disc itself. I have re-formatted the disc a couple of times and no luck. I was having some issues previously so maybe the disc was on it's way out earlier.

I don't know how comfortable you are with computer hardware but if you could put it into a PC and test it you would know for sure. I believe it is a Seagate drive so you could run Seagate's SeaTools software on it:

I need to get my recording back up as soon as possible so I have ordered a disc anyway so I'll find out soon enough.

If it's not the disc well I could do with an extra disc on my PC. So we'll see what happens.

No problem. Best of luck with the new drive.

I installed a 2TB WD Purple (WD20PURX) drive in my HDR-1000S. Seems to work fine, haven't noticed any issues.

    Hi again.

Just as an update on my Humax HDR1000S, I have fitted a new Western Digital 1 TB disc and got my unit working.....eventually!

It all seems quite odd but at least it's working now. I fitted the new disc and formatted it. The format took a long time, about 8 hours. I just left it overnight and in the morning the Humax had switched itself off. When I turned it on it still said the disc needed to be formatted.

Rather than giving up immediately, I tried formatting a few times. I got the same result again but on the 3rd attempt it formatted quite quickly (not sure, about 15 mins.) and it now seems to be working fine with lots of disc space. I have done some recordings and it seems to be ok.

I'll see how I get on. I suspect now that if I had attempted to format my original disc a few times that it may have also eventually worked.

    Thanks for assistance.

pop the old drive in a pc and use something like HDTUNE to test/look at the SMART data to see if the drive was failing
