Significant decrease in speeds between WiFi and wired.

I got fibre bb in yesterday, line says I should get 90Mb which I practically do with wired connection. With WiFi though it never goes beyond 20Mb, even when standing beside router. Now I know WiFi will never be as goodvas wired but is such a decrease normal? The other thing which I find odd is when I was on normal DSL I was getting 11mb wired and 9mb WiFi which was a much smaller decrease. Any suggestions? With Vodafone.

    Scenario:

    10Mph road drive a 12Mph car.

Then the road is upgraded to an 80Mph motorway. You still drive the same car, you still do 12Mph.

Its not about the relative speed, its about the maximum your wireless setup will handle. It sounds like you might have at least one device that only supports .11b/g so your router will fall back to slow mode. Turn off all your devices other than your newest one, reboot your router, and test again.

I'll try that but I had a look at it with inssider and it said it was on n. I also changed the channel and changed encryption to aes to see if it would do anything but it had no impact.

Wifi speeds are listed as Theoretical, you'll (pretty much) never get close with consumer grade hardware to the theoretical speed.

Yea I always knew WiFi was a bit hit and miss with speeds but I never realised how much slower it is compared to wired. I assumed it was relative to the overall speed of the connection until eds post. I'm going to give what he said a shot tonight and see if it has any impact.
