    Hi all.

I'm currently looking at buying a car and like the look of the FF.

My budget would be circa €5000 so I'm coming up with around 06 - 08 either 1.4 petrol or 1.6 diesel, don't want to go bigger than that.

I won't be doing huge mileage (less than 10k per annum)

Aside from the normal wear and tear of cars of that age, are there any issues with them?

    Would you recommend them?

Anything I should be aware of?

If I were you, with that budget and average mileage I wouldn't be looking at a Focus.

A petrol Focus should be very reliable. It will also be about the most boring car you could imagine.

If you don't have use for a diesel then I suggest stay well away from them. 1.6 diesel Focus of that vintage is far from robust. 1.4 litre petrol Focus is woefully underpowered, 1.6 petrol is much better and was available in two versions, 100bhp and 115bhp. 115bhp tend to be mostly Ghia or Titanium trim models.

If you're limited to 1.4 litre for insurance then look at the Toyota Corolla, Kia Ceed or Hyundai i30. All 1.4 litre versions of these have decent performance.

Bearing in mind I'm not into cars at all, i want something that's economical, relatively easy on tax and insurance and is reliable. I've been driving my wife's 02 Mini One for the last few years and while its fun to drive with good performance, its an absolute bastard on petrol and tax.

Insurance isn't a major concern Bazz but fuel consumption would be. Never thought of the Ceed, nice looking car.

A 1.6l Focus Zetec petrol (ideally a 3 door) is a fun car to drive George.

You would need to make sure the 1.6 diesel was serviced regularly because they do have problems with the turbo dying from lack of oil if it gets gunked up in the oil feed.

The 1.4 petrol would be pretty slow!

I have a 06 1.6 petrol Zetec, going from Harolds Cross to Blanch every day and getting 7L/100K now that I'm taking the M50 or above 8 going across town as I used to. Plenty of space and I find handling great, plenty of poke when you need it too. No issues so far
