Used be popular in the border counties at one time as Southern drivers wanted to blend in a bit better when visiting over the border frequently.

Seems to have been embraced by felters these days though.

Must be a fashion thing especially on border counties. I'm near it and I couldn't be arsed but I'm an old fogey. :D
The main requirements of the rules about the format of vehicle registration plates are:
    • The registration number consisting of numbers and letters must be in black on a white reflective background
    • The name of the county of registration must be in Irish, (examples are Baile Átha Cliath, Corcaigh, etc.)
    • The flag of the EU and the letters "IRL" must be placed on the left-hand side of the plate, the flag comprising 12 gold stars in a circle, the letters in white beneath it, all on a blue reflective background. No other numbers, letters, marks, etc., should appear on your registration plate.

That's a Northern reg though. I'm talking about southern reg Audi RS4 diesels, Toyota AE86 twin cams, etc.

Always thought my self aswell that it was for ROI driven round the border to blend in. Think it was more so during the troubles, with owners now just sticking with it.
