You Tube Selfie Culture

There is a good thread running on here about people with no personalities or nothing of interest about them doing constant selfies on Facebook.

The phenomena started on YT long before this. The idea being for these 'look at me!!!' types to make a video about a topic - but the video is really about them and the topic or subject is an intro into getting the rest of us to realise how amazing cool, fun or good looking the muppet making the video is.

In some ways it is far more disturbing and insidious than the Facebook selfie culture as they literally set a trap with a video title and image which lure you in and then you get a 10 min long selfie by some person expecting the human race to find them as amazing as they think they are.

While there has always been attention-seeing, vain and self-adoring people, has it always been this bad, or are we finally getting a mirror to how humanity really is and why people like me choose to remain locked in doors most of them time?

This is a classic example: Over nine minutes of this person before he gets to the subject at hand.

I have to question the intelligence of people who get upset at these sort of things.

The likes of Jenna marbles etc make a nice sum from ads on their YouTube channels just for talking about the most inane bolloxology..

I knew Ireland was doomed when the best and brightest of Ireland at TCD gave her not only an award, but were screaming like Justin Beiber fans when she came to bless these great minds of the future.

She probably never even knew there as a country called Ireland before TCD gave her an award for intellectual services to humanity.

I don't get the whole 'youtuber' thing. My kids love them but most of them are just annoying c*nts talking rubbish. They watch this one channel which is pretty much two parents pushing their kid as some sort of celebrity and offering prizes if other kids subscribe to his videos, then they buy stuff for him to 'review' in the hopes that the company will send other free stuff. All seems fairly pathetic.

    And why is that?

I used to appreciate the convenience of mediums like youtube when looking to find a how-to video or a music video or some current event. But all these fcuking 'youtubers' have destroyed the platform's convenience. Try to find something and you're guaranteed to have to trawl through shíte reply videos or reaction videos etc for a few minutes before actually locating what you want.

I was shocked when I seen it myself, but nowadays people would rather revere a fool..

I never found YouTube hard to navigate.
I am able to read words though, so I might have an advantage.

The reason they talk shít for 10 minutes for something that could be explained in 20 seconds is purely for monetisation. Youtube works on how many minutes people are watching, not by views anymore.

Hence why you now see 15+ minute long videos about seemingly nothing, that person has to keep jabbering on to keep the viewer interested.

I too can read words. This doesn't mean that there's less crap to trawl through. My point is still valid.

Deadly, I found that video on how to disable the alarm on my car with a hairbrush and a bit of tinfoil, but now I have to watch a 4 hour video of someone comparing the pro's and con's of hairbrushes to find the 2 minutes I actually need. :pac:

I don't understand why people watch these sorts of videos.

I don't understand why people make these sorts of videos.

    I'm old.

    I don't have to understand.

I still like watching television programs live on a television set and listening to albums from start to finish.

    I'm happy with that.

I sometimes do wonder though what these Youtube Selfie types will not understand when they're my age.

I probably won't even hear about it whatever it is.

Is anyone putting the kettle on?

Think I might have a cup of tea and read a printed newspaper.

    It's nice being old.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what *it* was. Now what I'm with isn't *it*, and what's *it* seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to you...

Young people today are vacuous idiots obsessed with trivialities so it makes sense that their idols would be idiots like themselves.

I clicked on that video and could tell straight away it was shite. If you've watched enough of the video to know that he doesn't start eating Tayto until the nine minute mark you only have yourself to blame.

I think these videos are mostly watched by kids, who find the person
sexy or are looking for a role model,
eg teens who do,nt know better .
There s 1000,s of people who make a living by putting up pics on instragram ,or make videos about make up ,fashion.
look at vine videos, they are mostly made by young people who
    are attractive looking.
We are going into a future where most people will work in
    services or shops ,offices .
Even people in factorys are being replaced by robots .
Youtube ,instragram is part of show business ,
    they are providing entertainment .
before youtube those people would go on reality tv,
People whose main talent is they are good looking and
they can talk about nothing .
    They talk about clothes ,
    trivial things .
They are todays version of boybands .
i don,t think 25 year old adults are watching jenna marbles .
Any idiot with a laptop can put up videos on youtube,
    theres no quality control .
These videos are like pop music,
    made for young people ,
remember how each generation says i don,t understand this new music ,
    its not made for you.

Bloody stupid videos. I can totally understand someone trying to make money from youtube but these people want more than that.... they wan't fame. As pointed out the videos are about them.

I remember clicking on one popular guy's video once out of curiousity. It kept coming up on the homepage on youtube. So anyways, the entire video was about him and his boyfriend going to a restaurant. That's it. His arm in the "selfie" position recording himself the whole time. Video had a million views as well.

Like, well done for making money for old rope (seriously, well done) But people watch this crap!?

Just after deleting my instagram, originally it was cool followed a load of cool photigraphers but then when i started university, everyone was like do you have instagram and i was like sure and they were like add me. So basically my feed was taken up by ****e selfies and thats why rather than stop following them and face an inquisition I said **** it I'll delete it.

I'm thinking of using Instagram. Do you sign up through Facebook or can you keep your identity private?

Why don't you just opened up another Instagram page under a different username, follow all the cool photographers with that one, and keep the original Instagram for real life people. Problem sorted :)

You can sign up private, national geographic and their photographers have some really cool photos, also all the different provinces of the comunidades in spain have really cool photos also.

People watch people playing games on Youtube. What the actual f*ck? This Youtuber Pewdiepie does just that and has over 12 billion views on his channel and made 12million dollars last year for doing it. He's 26. Unbelievable.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 790 ✭✭✭Sciprio

Youtube has a lot of junk being pumped out now but there's still a good few great videos but i miss the older times before google got their hands on it. I don't even pay attention to the rubbish on the homepage. I'm not going to watch what they want me to watch. Still it's okay when you find a gem but you're going to be going through a lot of rubbish to get there.

I generally look at you tube videos for decent training tips and diet plans. You can find some decent advice but some are woeful.

Some vlogs are very much "look at me" type's but I think that's part of the culture now. Same as instagram, some girls I went to school with are lethal for putting up selfies.

I used to dislike old Pewds for being one of the major driving forces of this whole Youtube celeb thing despite the fact that he is fairly talentless and pretty much just screams into a camera at jumpscare games but then he gave raised a bunch of money for charity so i reckon he can't be all that bad of a guy.

The rest of them can go **** though.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
