Is it black smoke or white smoke?

If it is black smoke on acceleration then I would be thinking about the EGR valve.

If its the 1.8 engine then the EGR valve is a right pain to access...I think you might need to remove the cat converter and the turbo to access it.

If I remember correctly you can however detach one of the pipes to see into the valve and assess the condition.
