Degree in Cloud Computing

    Hi all,

Hoping someone can help. I did a VMware course through JobBridge and gained employment but would like to progress my career and every job i see says you need a degree. I was looking at courses in CIT and by the looks of it I would need to do a 2 year certificate, then 2 year degree in computing then a 1 year degree in Cloud Computing (so all together would be min 5 years part time if I passed each subject).

Is there a faster way for me to get a degree? I would be willing to put in the work and do the 5 years but just wondering if there was a faster (and cheaper!) way around this?

Do you know if any financial aid is provided to those doing parttime courses in the evening / weekends?

There's no aid if you are working afaik. I think the shortest part time course you can do to get a degree is 4 years. I've only seen that in DIT so far though.

As far as I recall, you can get tax relief on course fees. That's about it.

I'm not sure what your interests are but Equal Ireland Galway provide level 7, 8 and 9 degrees done by distance learning. They have outreach classes in the West and North west, and in Monaghan. All their courses are accredited by Athlone IT, and they have a very good course Level 7 BA in Business, Enterprise and Community Development, and a level 8 one (I'm not sure of the title of it). The payments can be staggered, so it makes it very affordable, and they will come into any community that can provide a class of about 20, or you could travel to one of the existing classes. The tutors are excellent - classes are often on a Saturday which can make childcare more easily available, as often there are extended family or teens available to help - and it means that students can often keep down a full time job while studying. There is a website, but perhaps give them a call and see what they have to offer! http://equalireland.ie/

Have you looked at National College of Ireland. I think their Cloud course (1 year full-time, 2 year part-time, they might have brought in an online option) - can be accessed free. Its a QQI level 8 - Higher Diploma. Might be a way to cut down time/cost.

    EDIT:
Just to add. I did that course last year. So if you have any questions....

Hi thank you for the reply.

I couldn't find any higher diploma in cloud computing on their website but I did see a higher diploma in computing but it said you need a level 8 before you can apply and I only have level 5

    Have a look here:
    https://www.ncirl.ie/Courses/Springboard-Plus/Free-ICT-Skills-Courses

Its available through Springboard+. Semester 1 is standard, then semester 2 you 'specialize' in cloud. Though to be fair, there's not much 'cloud' stuff to it. Its effectively software dev at the end of the day.

Thanks but it says you need to have a honours degree already to gain entry, did you have a degree or did they let you in without one due to work experience?

You dont need any sort of degree (AFAIK and unless they've changed the rules) - as long as you can effectively demonstrate capability to keep up with the class it shouldn't be an issue.
They have an open day on the 13th of July (I think) go to that. These places get paid by you (or the government) so the more bums on seats the better, in their eyes.
Like I said, there's not really much 'cloud' to the course. You learn about it in a general sense but there's not much on learning about Azure or AWS etc.
Semester 1 will be Java as an introduction to Object Oriented Programming (look up Frances Sheridan on Youtube for a flavour of what to expect) Semster 2 is/was Ruby on Rails.
