Airline schedule change

Just wondering what way you stand when airlines change their schedule. My parents are booked on American Airlines to Vegas via Chicago. When we booked a few weeks ago the connection was about 1 hour 45 minutes which was perfect. I got an email last night to say the schedule is changed and the connection is now 6.5 hours. Now I wouldn't wish that connection in OHare on my worst enemy let alone my parents so is there anything that can be done in regards to cancel and full refunds as they don't seem to have any other flights in between, could American put you on a different airline perhaps. The flight lands in ORD at 11.45. They have a flight to Vegas at 12.30 which I seriously doubt they'd make and the next one seems to be the 6.25 one they've been changed to.

I don't think you're entitled to anything but it's worth contacting AA and asking them for a reroute ?

aparantly domestic to domestic (which a pre cleared flight from ireland would arrive at) needs only 45min connection time.
did the airline change this or the travel agent, as personally I'd risk the tight connection rather than a 6hour wait (and the airline would book you on the later flight anyhow should you miss the original one)

Flight was booked direct with American. I've just emailed them to see what they say. You don't need to change terminal either so it could be doable especially if the flight gets into Chicago early. They might just make it but luggage won't be, wouldn't be the end of the world though.
