    He was some character.

Lads I am absolutely gutted, he's one of the reasons i bought a ticket for Bellator London. He always seemed like a genuine guy whenever he was interviewed, who cared about fighting to make sure his family had money, hopefully Bellator looks after them. RIP big man.

    Dam that is horrible news.

    Very sudden

    Seemed to be very humble.

Largest mma audience for one of his fights, is that right.

    R.I.P

No cause of death yet but I wouldn't imagine its directly connected to a fight from four months ago. Rumblings of a massive heart attack on twitter but until anything confirmed its just all talk.

    RIP Kimbo
Seemed like a decent fella who surrounded himself by scumbags a lot of the time. I wasn't a fan of his but when he signed onto TUF he brought along a lot of youtube fans into MMA.

He was in 1 of the most boring fights I've ever seen against Houston Alexander. I remember ditching a party after xmas dinner to go and watch the fights and was ready for calling a taxi(to the party) during that fight :pac: I think it was the same night Jones lost his only ever fight to Matt Hamill :D

Terrible news, remember watching some of his street fights before even knowing what MMA was and thinking holy **** this dude is an animal.

    RIP.

its very sad news, he obviously used steroids but I doubt that had a large contribution to his death as some of the media has been spinning it

not a fan of his 'fighting' but have seen a few interviews and he seemed like a very nice guy, leaves behind a large family, hopefully he made enough money to keep them going for a while

Seems like Kimbo died of heart failure while on a donors list for a transplant. Which opens the question, how did he get medical clearance to fight Dada 5000 a few months ago or how were bellator planning on him fighting in July if his heart was in bad enough condition to need a transplant?

    Because Texas...

He was only told he needed a transplant a few days ago.
The Texas commission is very lax but he would of had to submit an EKG for his fight with Dada as he's over 36. I'm not sure how good they are at showing potential heart failure though.

Exactly! Why only a few days ago? Did his medical checks for his last fight show nothing? I'm presuming(possibly wronly) that serious heart conditions would be quite a long drawn out thing rather than within a few months it starts to fail, notified that transplant was required and to die all within that time.

Through UFC testing they found out about Dan Hardy's heart condition and even more recently, non heart related, Paddy Holohan's blood problem.

Well Bellator had that card in Texas because they have lax testing for everything.

I don't know what's required to test for potential heart failure but he passed his EKG.

Hardy's condition didn't show up the first ten times he fought in the UFC and I thought a third party came forward about Paddy's issue

He was due to fight in London, how is the testing there?

I know that about Hardy, which is why my thinking is that these heart conditions take time to develop instead of being diagnosed and dead within a week. I think your right about Paddy but think it was through UFC that asked for 3rd party opinions or sent the results off to be checked.

I think bellator's creditibility needs to come into question again with this. 1 fighter claims to have nearly died during a fight while the other dies a few months later and about a month before he was due to fight again! Doesn't sit right with me

Oh I agree, Bellator need to be asked questions and I would be curious to see what sort of medicals they have their fighters doing in London.

Hopefully extensive! A lot of people like to slate the UFC & jump in head first to anything they feel the UFC are wrong about (Helwani,Reebok, etc) but I think most people also forget the good it does aswell. Theres 2 young lads in Dan & Paddy that the UFC possibly could have saved their lives through testing whereas other organisations are maybe not doing enough(saying "cutting corners" maybe is too much) for the health of their fighters. After years and years of nothing like this happening, within the last 6 months or so 2 fighters have died within days of fighting(or due to fight) another dies between fights and Dada v.lucky to be alive.

Paddy knew what he had and kept it from the UFC and it wasn't nearly as serious as Dans, but I agree testing seems to be lax outside the UFC.

I think you're wrong there. The massive amount of unnatural weight and high blood pressure he probably carried due to his steroid use is hardly good for the heart.

Yeah, from his comments he has known for years. It also suggest that somebody else randomly let the UFC know. For example, his doctor found out he was fighter and felt he had a duty of care.
I don't know if it was his doctor, but its the likely scenario imo.

It's likey that it was a factor, but it may not have been.
Maybe the texas commision and/or Belator should have flagged this. But maybe its not the type of thing that is easily flagged. I don't think there has been many details of the specifics.

There's no way he should have been fighting in london if he was on the transplant list though. Obviously at that stage something have been uncovered
