External Wall Requiring Plaster Patching

HI all - my external wall has always been a mess. Plaster pieces have always being falling off of it over the years. Is this repairable via DIY or does this require professional repair?
If DIY, can anyone advise on how I might attempt to go about it? Materials, coats, getting that final finish?
If professional, is this considered a major undertaking - I believe that plastic surgery makes very professional alterations to your bank balance if nothing else - for a wall of three times this length would the likely financial cost render me temporarily speechless?
