Opel vectra noisy cam pulley(s).

Changed the engine recently in my nieces 2006 Opel Vectra 2006 1.8 petrol (XER engine).
The guy who supplied the engine assured me it was a good one.
This engine has VVTpulleys on each camshaft and solenoids to control oil flow to each one.
On starting it there was an intermittent rattle at tickover and low revs.
I contacted supplier and he suggested trying it for a few days as these engines are prone to sicking valves/cam followers if left unused for a while.
Rattle doesn't seem to be going away and I'm pretty sure its one (or both) of the cam pulleys causing the problem.
Finding it hard to get much info on these engines so was hoping someone here might be able to offer some advice such as :
    (a) is there any way of knowing if its the solenoid(s) or the cam(s) at fault ?
    (b) the 'old' engine had no rattles so would changing over the cam pulleys
be a good idea ? (have already changed the solenoids)
    (c) removed all the filters from the solenoids - does ECU need to be reset
    after this ?
    (d) where would be the best place to buy new pulleys/solenoids if it comes
    to that ?
