I find it very strange when people pass a comment about their child/nephew/niece/brother/sister etc who say 'oh she is addicted to this game on the phone, it's so cute' or other comments and the kids could be as young as 2.

Is it just me or is giving kids under school age a phone to play with just lazy parenting. I personally think it's bad for them. Especially in this weather, why would you give a child a phone rather than let them play outside? What do you think?

I hate seeing young kids with mobile phones.

Especially when it's better than mine, little bastards!

I would not be criticizing other peoples parenting decisions unless those decisions were impacting on me. Especially when you dont know what the rest of the kids day was like. The kid may well have spent most of the day playing outdoors and just getting a short time in front of the screen.

Brats with no manners or making loads of noise would get my criticism!

Let a two year old play outside?

    WTF?

Outside is full of child molesters and kidnappers, inside is full of sharp knives and rays, they'll stay in the hall until their 18

My just turned 2 nephew has been playing outside since he could walk. He loves being out in the garden. If it's a dry day my sister has him out.

What kind of person wouldn't let a 2 year old out to play? When would they get fresh air and exercise?

It wouldn't be my way of doing things but how parents parent is not my concern.
I think the majority do their best. God knows there is enough judgment and criticism without casting disapproving glances at a child playing on a phone.

Hasn't it been shown that mobile phones/tablets/touchscreen devices are beneficial for young kids to use and can actually improve their hand-to-eye coordination?

They can be excellent for children with certain conditions

I've a son who is 2, loves to play Monument Valley but I wouldn't call him addicted. He would only play for a bit in the evenings when he is burned out from the all the running about all day. Don't see anything wrong with it, was actually quite surprised that he could even figure out how to play the game.

Someone I know is a remedial teacher and would have some students that would have down syndrome and other conditions. One such girl, who was making zero advancement with normal practices, was given the school's iPad, which was acquired through various schemes, and had very specific educational apps. They improved quite a lot through these and even saw a huge increase in spatial awareness and hand-to-eye coordination.

I have Nephew who watches youtube minecraft games for hours on end.
Seems to be videos of people actually playing a video game. Why would you want to watch someone else play a game.
If I disable youtube he resembles an addict needing a fix.. its crazy. And yes its lazying parenting as he can sit there for 7 hours watching same thing over n over.
He spends 5 mins on homework then straight to the youtube and minecraft.

As a child did you not spend hours on end watching TV? Playing video games? I assume you spent every second of every day outside.

People often naysay at other kids, usually forgetting that chances were they were the exact same as kids.

Yeah, these parents are destroying their kids lives by letting them use smartphones. I fear for their generation, I really do.

Would you say the same if a child spent hours reading/looking at books on a rainy day?

As I kid I spent a good five hours watching kids TV on Saturday before bloody Grandstand put an end to it, all the kids on the street did the same

And then out to play till it got dark

Why not? Are two year-olds allergic to direct sunlight?

Mobiles are not good for kids but adults also due to radiation, however for kids who are in development are specially bad.
But I think if they get to play on it for some reasonable time eg 1 hour a day what harm can it make
Some games are designed and proven to increase the intelligence and various skills so why not
Of course, playing with them and taking them outside is more important, but I wouldn't be fanatical about (not) playing games :)

How is that cute or amusing?

I enjoy how easily amused kids can be. Running around a pillar being the height of enjoyment, or the hours of fun playing with a bucket.

Or the ones that decide to feast on a banquet of worms, or the one (me) who enjoyed sniffing the petrol can for the dizzy feeling.
