    Hi boardsies,

Sorry in advance for the long post. I'd like to get some perspective on a situation. It's not a problem I'm with, but a decision that will be a major live changer if I decide to go through with it.

Last week I heard that my contract won't be renewed. I was due to get a permanent contract which didn't happen. My last working day will be exactly a month from now.
Obviously I'm jobhunting and I've always wanted to work and live abroad again. I moved to Ireland when I was twenty and stayed for two years, so it's not like I have never experienced it before, but I've always wanted to go again, only this time to a different continent. There are some companies in Johannesburg(South Africa) that are looking for Native speakers and I'm pretty sure that if I apply, I'd be hired. That would mean packing up everything here and moving to South-Africa for at least a year.

I know the countries' reputation is not good: a lot of crime, can't go out after dark, some areas are stricktly off-limits for white people(not trying to sound rasist here) because it's too dangerous. The plusside for me is the fantastic nature and scenery, the chance to travel Africa and possibly going on a once in a lifetime adventure.

The other thing that I'm struggling with is that I would have to give up my pets. I have four guinea pigs and it would feel like I'm abandoning them. I got them during a difficult time in my life and it feels as though I'm saying to them: 'You served your purpose and goodbye', when in reality, I'd be gutted to see them go to another home. I would also have to get rid of nearly everything I own, and find storage for the items I do need to keep for when I come back.

I'm really in two minds about this and would like to get some perspective on this. What do you guys say? Thanks a lot.

Who's making you choose between your pets/stuff and a good job? No one except you....

Why not try and get another job where you can keep your pets/stuff - be that in Ireland or UK etc... If that job doesn't work out then South Africa will always be there as an option.

Go for it! Don't even give it a second thought, worst that can happen is you ll hate it and come home. So why not? Guinea pigs will be fine everyone loves a Guinea pig you ll have no difficulty getting someone to mind them :)

Of course no-one is making me choose, but I feel that I might not get another chance like this, and keeping my pets would not be an option going so far away. I would have to find another home for them.

I know the option will always be there but right now I have the money to go, am not "tied down" by a partner, children, mortgage(only pets) and it kind of feels like its now or never.

Thx. I would really love to go and you're right: if I don't like it I can always come back and have the experience for the rest of my life. It's a big move however, and then there's my parents, they will not agree and I can already hear the fights and arguments that will happen when I tell them. I know that shouldn't even matter, but my parents are extremely biased against black people and see Africa as a hellhole, and there's no telling them otherwise. I wouldn't be suprised if this would cause a major rift between us....It's a lot to think about..
