Have topper set at around 12 cm.. I read from teagasc and people in the know that for topping to improve grass quality should b set at around 5 cm, that topping high is a waste of time and money..
There is different settings in my topper so there is no issue lowering it down but the question i have is by setting the topper low will i hit every bump in the field and will b shearing bolts like mad?
Am i better leaving it b??
    I have no mower

That's kinda impossible for us to answer without knowing your fields really? ;)

Could you lower it a bit, not to the full 5cm, and see how you get on for a while? Then if you think you could lower again you could...

Dropped ours down to 4. Fine in fields that aren't rough and not many stones but dog slow if a lot hairy grass left. This is where a mower would win hands down time wise. Just have to be more careful in rough paddocks, we have heavy thick blades on our perfect but they take extra sharpening but unless it's a rock u hit generally the stone goes.flying.

Thanks milked out.. Does it really make a big difference in the regrowth to cut it that short??

Yup. All your left with after 5-6cm is stem which will just keep growing. cutting low while topping encourages fresh grass to get a head start getting a leafier after growth.

Topping with the topper in anything other than the lowest setting is pure cosmetic, and a total waste of diesel and time!

Had to cut an inch of our Abbey years ago to get her low enough. She will either break stones or send them out.
