Best option for NES/Famicom console?

    Hello,

One of the remaining consoles I want to get is an NES but I am not sure what the best choice is. My requirements are that it must play at 60hz, best video output (compo for NES?) and have a decent flash cart that will work for it. THere is an NES Everdrive so that should be suitable. ;)

I remember researching this before and I seem to remember concluding that the Japanese console is the better option as it will run at 60hz and play US games (60hz).

Is there a better/recommended setup? I know little about the console so keen for feedback.

The Famicom is the best bet, preferably with the AV mod already in situ.
That said, the control cables are very short, might want to invest in a decent third party pad for it, they plug into the auxiliary port at the front of the machine.
The Fami everdrive is brilliant, well worth investing in.
However, there is a lot to be said for buying the good stuff, pick up a decent multicart instead of the flashcart, mine is available from many chinese outlets for around a fiver and has nearly everything there, with no clones.

If you can get one, a top loader is probably even better but they are stupid expensive. They don't stop reading cartridges after a strong gust of wind.

Go for a Twin Famicom if the budget extends that far. Failing that, get a Famicom with the video mod done :)

They might be functional but I find them ugly as sin.

Famicom with AV mod all the way.

Well, either that or a Famicom Titler :pac:

    Thanks for the info.

I think the Famicom model 2 (top loader) has composite without any mod required; will probably get that model. For those also looking, you can pick one up on ebay from this seller yamotaku-classic:

I bought my Jap N64 and Mega Drive 1 from them. Got a good deal on both and postage was not bad either. Could probably get the famicom for less than 50 in total. :)

I've a 60hz USA NES under the TV for the past few years with a retrousb powerpak and it gets the most play. Looks great on the 55inch screen with the NES RGB mod (http://etim.net.au/nesrgb/) and sent through a scanline generator (SLG kit).

the retroUSB guy also has a new nes clone console coming out soon called avs. Has hdmi, scanlines, supports the expansion audio etc.

From what I gather, that is the best model nes they made in terms of video quality. I was on the verge of buying one, but held off as they're not the best looking console, and decided to just stick with a us nes.

I kinda love the look of the top loader. The controllers for it are great, with nice long cables.
