I got my first fm am radio as a Christmas gift (a ubc75xlt) and just wondering does anyone know any interesting frequencies I can pick up from the wicklow area?

You should be able to get the Mount Leinster amateur repeater on 430.950Mhz and the Kippure repeater on 145.7625Mhz. Also there should be some Marine activity. Your best bet is to try to put some sort of an antenna on the roof of possible - you won't get much with the rubber duck.

Try to catch the ISS as it flies by (check the times on heavens-above.com) at 145.800 and 145.825.

Or listen to Fox-1A at 145.980, also check for a suitable pass of course. Fox-1A is a microsat so much lower power than ISS so not as good a starting point but I have received it successfully on a rubber duck. ISS is super easy.

What can you hear coming from the ISS? Is it all just hello Houston?

No they don't use the amateur rigs for their own communication. If they're on it they just use it to chat with other HAMs. And also schools when there's a scheduled school contact. But most of the time it's set for APRS so you'll hear digital packets. You can use an app on your phone to decode them. They're basically position reports from people on the ground that are received and rebroadcast by the ISS.
