has anyone used a wagtail shaker to set kale seed?
just wondering if it is successful , a bit afraid that the seed will come out too fast and be out of seed with have the field done. only about 2 acres to set.

I have heard of someone that did but you would want the doors open to a tiny hole and it would be a bit of a gamble. Throw the fertilizer out on concrete and mix in the seed. Shovel it into the spinner and away you go, set the spinner to a lower setting than normal drive closer as the seed might not be thrown as far. When you have the field finished 'cross' it with whatever is left.

If the fertilizer is already out I know someone who used to mix it with sand.

    fertilizer is not out yet.
was looking at throwing out 4 bags of 18-6-12 per acre and 1 bag of seed per ace. would you just mix 1 bag seed to 1 bag of fertilizer and then spread the rest of the fertilizer later

Just mix enough seed for 1 acre with one bag of fert and and spread it at half bag to the acre and cross it with another run, that way you'll be sure of an even cover.

Put out the fert first Harrow it in then go with the fert mixed with seed and cover it lightly after with a chain Harrow.

Ya did it 2 years ago with a vicon, either 3 or 6 on the setting, as small as possible, can't remember. Didn't mix it with fertiliser. I think I went over it twice.

Done it last year with wagtail. Set it as low as possible and only put in half. Do not mix with fertiliser because the kale seeds are smaller and will end up moving down the spreader quicker and be spread first

I've mixed kale seed and forage rape seed with fertiliser many times and it never separated in the spreader. The only problem putting seed on its own in the spreader is that it won't spread it p1ssing distance where as when it's mixed with fertiliser you driver normal distance apart.

i have put it out before with the rauch spinner (twin disc). Spinner is hardly open at all when driving around. Only leave the width of a tractor distance. I also went around a second time to try and get it as even as possible.

ya set grass seed as well. seems to turn out perfect. It has been 25+ years since I last had a wagtail. Always had rauchs since. For the grass seed I normally tie on a zig zag harrow to the back and pull it after me.

I have spread Kale, clover, turnip seed etc over the years with a wag tail spreader by mixing the seed with a few bags of fert, never had any problem with the smaller seed going to the bottom of the spreader, just make sure you mix well as you load the spreader.

    One pass being used here.

    One pass being used here.

It leaves a very fluffy seedbed for forage crops or reseeding.
