So bored during the summer

I'm 20, finished college for the summer, and I'm so so bored.

I have nothing to do with my days. I get up at 11, watch tv, try and improve my web development skills, and walk my dogs, that's it. I go cinema once or twice a month, and football every Friday.

I don't have a job, and I haven't bothered looking as my dad said he would have work or me, and now he doesn't. I'm going to France with my mates next week, but when i come back, ill be bored again. I'm going mad being at home all day.

Any ideas on what to do, or advice on finding a part time job.

Voluntary work. Take up hobbies. Look online (Gumtree/donedeal/etc) for part-time jobs in your area, or check your local newspapers. Bars are always looking part-time staff and it's a good way to socialise with different people too.

Honestly, your biggest enemy will be procrastination and motivating yourself to actually do something.

Getting up at 11 means it's probably closer to 12 before you start actually doing something, by the time you get washed and have breakfast and get yourself in gear. That's half the day gone. I've always found that when I get up early - say 7am - on a day off, I get much more done and have surprisingly more energy.

Exercise. Body weight exercises. Pick a time where you try to increase what you can do each day. Keep going. You'll waste so much time and, if you keep increasing, will look and feel better by September.

FFS your 20 and have the summer off, if I was you I'd be grabbing a tent and a surfboard and heading straight to the west coast.

Seriously get out there and enjoy life.

Bit pointless it's been flat for ages. And he probably doesn't have a car which makes that sport quite inaccessible. And then you've to buy a board and a wetsuit etc which costs around 500 quid...

Try not to worry too much OP. I had similar thoughts at your age, that I should be doing more and that I was bored etc. Enjoy not having any pressure for now, it will all change one day!

This could be your last summer!! Dwell on that.

Assuming that you're finishing college next year - a lot do finish up at 21 -, you won't be on summer holidays anymore, just unemployed.

It's something that won't hit you until you're about 25, but right now after 17 years of school and college, summer holidays are a given as a 3 month break. After this it'll be 2 weeks if you're lucky.

So seize the day, you've a big Trip to France to plan and enjoy, then another 2 months where you can do anything. If you don't in a few years you'll be looking back at those endless days of possibilities and cursing yourself roundly.

Oh big plus 1 to this! Do it now. As someone said earlier, you'll be finishing up soon and won't get a chance like this again.

Pickup a scone Hand one cheap enough and a wetsuit can also be got cheap , there are things called bikes, busses and trains, you don't need a car

    You're very negative

It's not too late to get a job for the summer? I've seen signs around, even saw one this morning. If you really want a job, start being proactive about it. Call into places and hand out CVs. Even if nothing comes of it, it'll definitely keep you busy for a while!

There's being negative and then there's being realistic; you're asking someone with no job and living with their parents to invest in a hobby that will cost them the guts of a few hundred, when you include the cost of: 1) the secondhand board, which will still cost €100+, a wetsuit, travel expenses (bus and trains aren't cheap!).

It really just isn't realistic, tbh.

A trip to France isn't cheap , the OP has not cited lack of money.

I'm not negative but getting around the west with a surf board would be a nightmare. I've a lot of disposable income with not much tying me down at the weekend and surfing is a bit of a logistical nightmare unless you live near to a beach that's consistent!

    I remember these times OP.
As a cheap option to keep your brain engaged you could think up some personal Web development project that you could do by yourself?

It'll help you improve more keep you from being bored and interviewers love to hear about that kind of thing.

i am going to recommend fishing if you are after a cheap hobby to keep you busy, you can pick up a decent brand new rod and reel for 30 euro these days and another 10-20 euro on gear. but you also seem to be interested in working so as others have said hit the streets and check sites such as monster, indeed, jobs.ie etc you will find something to keep you busy i'm sure.

Id say do a bit of traveling OP, do a J1 or a work holiday visa to Oz if you dont have any money and pay your way that way. It doesnt seem like it now but your twenties are just going to fly past and if you're just passing the days doing nothing like I did it will kill you when you turn 30 and you realise you have no experiences to remember.

Contact local charities or non-profit organisations and ask if they'd like you to do/improve a website for them for free. You'll develop your technical skills, get a feel for what it's like working with "clients" on a project, start getting a portfolio together & references, and they'll get some help. Win/win.

Coderdojo might be a good place to check with. Not sure if they operate during summertime, but worth a shot.

1 day to sleep late with no kids and just watch TV for the day would be heaven.

    OP take up
    running, cycling, gym.
Read books, play games, watch TV.
    Travel, photography, learn a language.
Meet people, chat to strangers, visit relatives.
Learn to drive, book cheapest flights, midweek deals.
    What do you enjoy doing?

TBH with the internet the way it is, with the amount of things that you can learn, hobbies you can take up, and just general activities, I find it weird to think anyone could get bored.

Buy a ukulele and teach yourself how to play it by watching YouTube videos.

Learn to drive if you aren't already able. You'll thank yourself later.

Go meet your mates somewhere for lunch. As many days as you can. Whether it's a local pub or a cafe or whatever. You might be bored together, you might not. But most likely between you, you'll find stuff to talk about and things to do.

if i was you op I would go on a 2 or 3 day camping trip somewhere remote in Ireland with your friends, bring some beers, fishing rods, barbeque , tents etc it would be a great laugh id say.

What a waste of human power and potential.
People in their 20's are in the prime of the life. Healthy, enthusiastic, strong. Use it!

    Make something, sell it.
    Work, earn.

Or, if not earning, then building up your skillset, by doing an online course (see coursera) or building yourself up with exercise.

I don't want to go all "back in my day" on ya, but I worked my arse off all through college. Evening job, weekend job, summer jobs. Saved my tail off and had a house deposit when I graduated. Also had an absolute blast and met a load of awesome people doing it.

Being busy is the best thing ever. Get on it.
If you can't find someone to employ you, employ yourself down the local car boot sale.

OP if I was in your position I'd be extremely bored also. Try to get a job. I worked full time every summer until I finished college. Hand out CVs everywhere. Ask to speak to managers. I worked in hotels and bars for about 10 years, was the best fun I ever had!

    Jobs.ie for jobs
    Ask local places for work
Tinder, POF, Okcupid for dating if you know no one in town to hook ya up
Force yourself to go out on the weekend
If you drive, just go and see Ireland
Look for adventurous people to travel with you
