For my leaving cert I chose the subjects art biology French and accounting. When I leave school I want to do something in accounting or medicine. However I only got 3 out of 4 of my subject choices, i got business instead of French and I was told I have to drop biology to do French as they are on at the same time. So what should I do. My other option was to drop art and do biology and then pick French. But I really like art and French so what should I do . I also do not want business as i am not really interested in it but I have to do it because the only other subjects I could pick are geography home ec and dcg and I never did those subjects before.

If you want to do Medicine, you will need as many sciences as you can do.
You will need a language for most colleges, so you have to keep the French.

Why are you considering Accountancy if you don't like Business?

You don't need to have done any of those subjects before to do them for the Leaving. While it would probably be a stretch to do DCG, you wouldn't be in any way disadvantaged in taking Geography.

TCD and UCC require you to have taken two lab sciences for medicine. Afaik, the other three places are okay with one (but I think you have to do the 6-year course).

Could you do Chemistry alongside French and Art? That would satisfy most science requirements and is probably a better preparation for medicine anyway.

I don't think a foreign language is a necessary requirement, Spurious.

Edit: actually just remembered I think that a foreign language is a requirement for medicine

On the matter of requiring a third language...I think you'll need to do individual research. Trinity doesn't require one, UCD seems to in most cases - but not all. Maybe you can correct me Spurious?

What jobs can u get with JUST biology. I'm so confused😭😭.Is there a website that shows u what jobs you can get with different subjects or one that shows what subjects u need for different jobs. Also, should I drop art and do biology and French

I doubt you'd be able to get a specialist job out of school that would require a particular subject. prospects.ac.uk has a very comprehensive section showing different careers that might help.

If you really like Art, I would keep it up and find a solution. But dropping it does seem the more straightforward option.

If you want to do Medicine and you like Art and French, go for Biology, Chemistry, French and Art if you can.

AFAIK, Trinity requires a language other than English. Doing French would keep the option of dropping Irish open, should it be necessary.

I don't know the specifics of every course, perhaps there are some you can leave out a language for, though of course that would limit you for studying abroad, Erasmus etc..

Trinity requires a pass in English and one other language so provided Cookie isn't exempt from Irish and doesn't do worse than a pass at Ordinary Level, there is no need to do an extra language for entrance purposes. Of course, people fail every year and some opt for Foundation Level but for most, there is no need to do another language if they don't want to. Of course, it would be essential for Erasmus and similar study abroad schemes. :)

Trinity Medicine doesn't require a third language but it does require two lab sciences i.e. two from Biology/Ag Science, Chemistry/PhysChem and Physics/PhysChem.

My advice would be to ask your school if you can do Biology on your own at the back of the Business class. If you get yourself into one of those college days where they do all the experiments for you in one day and you've wrote them up in a booklet, you'll be fine for the experiments. Biology's not too tough to learn and I don't think you'd struggle much doing it yourself.

If you want to do Medicine though a lot of courses require two laboratory sciences. Is your other subject a lab science? Definitely don't drop French. Trinity is the only college that doesn't require a third language for Medicine. While the NUI Colleges (UCC, NUIG, UCD) dropped the third language requirement for Science and Engineering courses they didn't drop it for Medicine.

But will you have to do Business then? That wouldn't make much sense if you hate it. If you like Art stick to it. I'm sure your school will help you find a fit that suits. Talk to your guidance conseullor.
