    Ive been given one of these...I read that most of the transmitters worldwide have been turned off - but are there any still operational in Ireland that i can tune into?

    It looks great - you select the frequency at the back and its supposed to pick up morse coming from the direction you point it.. Is there anything left working I can pickup with it?

    Plenty. They are in between the Long Wave and Medium Wave and can be picked up on a general coverage receiver. An electrically quiet location and a good antenna will help. The strongest one where I am is Gormanstown GMN on 334 kHz. Also strong are Dublin OE 316 and OP 397, Rush 326, Killiney KLY 377 and Belfast HB 420.

    Robert Connolly from Kilkeel writes a column about Non Directional Beacons every month in Radio User. It is possible with good equipment to receive beacons from many different countries.
