    Afternoon All

Spotted one of these yesterday in my back garden yesterday...Dublin near Phoenix Park. I don't recall ever seeing one before - quite striking with thrush-like front and grey/black tail. A quick look at a book of Irish Birds suggested a Fieldfare. Are they that unusual ??. I'm just surprised I've never come across them before.

Unfortunately he didn't stay long enough for me to take a pic...the attached image is borrowed from Google.

    Thanks,
    K

It's unusual to have a Fieldfare still here at this stage. They are winter visitors to Ireland and usually come from Scandinavia late in the year (October/November), and stay until about March. There may be the odd straggler of course, but it's now June, so could it have been something else perhaps?

It's a Fieldfare for sure. A very late sighting.

OP says that photo wasn't his, and he just attached a photo of a Fieldfare from Google, so it very definitely is one :)

I wonder if what he saw was a young blackbird? Here's a photo of one from the RSPB website ...

They have a very thrush like breast.

Sorry, I misread the OP and thought that was the bird.

My guess would be that the op may have seen a mistle thrush perhaps

    Morning All

We had the same visitor again in our Dublin garden yesterday...and I did manage to grab some poor quality pics on my mobile. The previous responses did rule-out a Fieldfare...and correctly I believe.

I now believe it was/is a Jay. You can just make out the blue flash on the wings...plus the black/white tail stripes. They're an impressive bird and the pics don't really convey the actual size. My book suggests they're only seen in 2% of Irish gardens...and I don't recall seeing one before.

Anyway...please excuse the poor pics but hopefully I'm right this time !.

    Thanks,
    K

It's a jay alright.Normally a quite secretive bird that lives in woodland.
