Im thinking of applying for job in the public service, but Im finding it hard to understand where to start the whole process from.I looked at their website and registered, buts it just lists of job, where you need loads of experience. I have a few questions which I would be so grateful if anyone cud clarify

1 Im looking for the form for all Public Appointments Service competitions . But I cannot find the form. Does anyone know what this competition is about, is it to get into the public serive through a competition??

2 People r talking on this site about PAS, I looked it up , Im not sure about it. How do you join, what does PAS exactly entail

3 Basically Im starting off in this whole area. I have qualifications and experience in other sectors, but where should I start with the public service. What form should I fill out to begin with(if there is such a form), Im just finding it very hard to get info on the above

    .

I know some of the above mite stupid questions, but I just wud be so grateful for a few pointers to set me on the right track Thanks

You can't just "apply" for a job in the Public Service i.e. send in a CV/application and hope they consider you. There are normally competitions when vacancies arise and this is how you can enter the process. Available jobs are posted on publicjobs.ie and there is usually fierce competition for these jobs. PAS (Public Appointments Service) have been running general public service competitions since the embargo has lifted which include competitions at CO, EO, AO, AP and PO grade. All have since closed but they have advertised a new CO competition (link below) - closing date 16th June.

You absolutely can drop in a CV. I work in the public service, and a couple of my colleagues have got jobs that way in the past. Get in touch with an hospital, educational body, state agency, whatever and give them your CV and it's possible they could get back to you.

Only some public sector jobs are advertised on publicjobs.ie. You should also check other job websites and the individual websites of different public bodies (of which there are many!)

By the way, it seems that both the opening poster and the poster quoted may be treating the terms "public service" and "civil service" as interchangeably. The civil service only consists of government departments and a small number of other core bodies. The public service incorporates the civil service along with the health service, local authorities, government agencies, the Gardaí, Defence Forces, teaching profession, etc. The terms do get confused but there's a big difference.
