In the market for a large people carrier. Thinking about a 3 year old Alhambra. Reason is as well as using the 7 seats all the time, I'd need something that has a good towing capacity and the Alhambra is rated at 2-2 tonne, also don't want anything with expensive road tax. Anybody know what their real mpg is like, either manual or automatic ? Also mechanically, anything major to look out for. Any advice appreciated!!!

I'm looking at the Alhambra myself. From what I've heard, there's very little goes wrong with them. No major problems. (I'm open to correction). Volkswagen Sharan and Ford Galaxy are very similar size wise. They used to all have identical body on older models. From experience I'd stay away from Galaxy. The one I had gave trouble from word go. Other options are Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorrento. Both have 2.2 engine but no boot space when 7 seats in use. I'll probably go to Northern Ireland when I decide for definite what I'll go for. Savings are massive even when Vrt is added. Let me know what you go with.

Great car with no real issues. The sliding doors are excellent for getting kids in and out. Although with 7 seats up there is feck all space in the boot.

You may need to go up North to get a good second hand one. Try and get one with the big sunroof.

In my opinion the best one to get is the 140 or 170 BHP DSG one. The car really doesn't suit a manual gearbox.

You wouldn't know that the auto's are like on diesal ?

The 1980s are gone. Modern automatics are just as fuel efficient as the manual and are very suited to the torque of diesel engines. VW's new generation of DSG is up there.

I'm actually swayed towards the automatic alright as I want to do some towing, but was hoping someone might have some real world MPG instead of manufacturers claimed figures.

Yes my mate has a 170 BHP DSG and it is very easy on diesel.
The autos are actually slightly more efficient on diesel than manual ones

With a DCT there is no energy loss at the torque converter. There is a minor loss at the clutches - as they are submerged in oil, but that is really negligible

What's more, the on-board computer can and will immediately pick the most efficient gear for the current load, bringing down the consumption.

To sum up - DCT is more efficient than any human.

Advised the MIL to buy and Alhambra as they were the best 7 seater I could find. She then went off and bought the 7 seater 2-Series! Not fit for purpose, its one of the smallest 7 seaters. Third line of seats are a waste of space if you are an adult :)

I'm a bit ignorant when it comes to automatics. Having driven some old autos, I never liked them. I'm assuming they've improved over time? Is there a huge difference in fuel consumption? Most of my driving will be motorways and national roads with the school run thrown in.

How do the ordinary Irish 115 bhp models drive in comparison to the 140bhp ? Just thinking, buying an Irish one would save you having to sell your own motor privately ?
