    Oil pump stopped pumping?

Yes its the Oil Pump..message on dash was Engine off / oil pressure. If i'm looking at a replacement engine, should I have a new oil pump fitted also, how much for oil pump ? - Thanks

George would be the expert on replacement/reconditioned oil pump drives.
I just wonder how easy/cheap it is to get one of those engines... you won't be the first or the last to get the bad news about that type of engine.

Is it totally shot ? Or did the driver react quick to the oil pressure warning light ? It may not be a dead duck. You might get away with a pump assembly swap out and possibly a fried turbo replacement as it does not last long once the oil supply is ceased. Same thing happened to me over a yr ago; same engine. Different car though. Turbo was not swapped out and it's been fine since.

As other have indicated, GD is an authority on this problem in-particular along with all thing Audi/VW.

There was a design change around 2006 IIRC; basically a chain driven system was replaced with a gear drive unit. Not sure what is in yours; could be either. If it is the former, then a full upgrade to a gear system (and new TB/WP as it'd be silly not to do it during the works) would run you circa €1800-€2000. If its a gear system thats currently fitted, and no other damage has been caused by oil starvation, then its a much cheaper job as the bulk of the money outside of the labour is for the gear drive. If you have the gear drive, then its hopefully just a failed drive hex key at best.

It's sick to think that a €5 part can kill an engine in both variants.

I think it may be caught in time. - Will an engine code tell me whether the oil pump has a chain driven or Gear driven system?

Yes. Post it. Out of interest, did you notice any chain-type rattling in the days leading up to the failure ?

    Engine Code is BKP.

No rattling noises before the event but now it's a loud click and hammering noise so I'm not sure whether it's too late or not but interested to know whether we have the chain driven or gear driven part..? - Thanks

Jesus, whatever you do, do not start it! I was just curious if you had heard anything unusual before the oil light. If the hex key rounded, then you will hear nothing abnormal. My situation - chain tensioner packed in resulting in loose (untensioned chain) and the aforementioned rattle. Hopefully George will be along and he will be able to confirm one way or the other(might need your VIN for reference). I was hoping you were going to say BLB. That's definitely chain. I think the BKP is chain too but hopefully I'm wrong :o

I took Georges advice..stripped back engine to access damage..found hex that was rounded off at one end..so replaced it. It was only visible damage. Car driving fine again EXCEPT for high pitched noise when accelerating..I persume this is turbo..Do i need to replace?
