Long term storage

So I'm in the middle of moving house, then moving to Canada in about 8 weeks, which means a lot of my stuff will have to go into storage. Any Tips for storing games & consoles long term? The house where it'll be stored is a new build so should be fine with regards to damp or anything. My current plan is as I'm packing to turn on and run each console for a while so I know it's all working. Going to pick up a few of these for storing everything and keep them out of sunlight. Anything else I should do?

    Master of the Universe

Cheapest way I've always done it is Tesco crates. Pack them up, cover them in a cloth material (I always used tshirts) and then some black bags over the top.

Have had one thing or another in storage like that for almost ten years in attics/storage units and nothing has broken yet.

In fact the only stuff that's ever broken is the gear I've brought with me

Dammit, we'll have to have a get together before you leave!
How long are you going to be in Canada for?

    Um, no.

Won't be bringing much if anything really with me bar 3ds stuff so should be fine in storage as it won't be moved. I'll see if I can rob a few crates the next time I'm getting shopping delivered :pac:

Heading off for 2 years if all works out. Will definitely plan something before I go!

Also buy a few hundred packets off Silca gel for pennies and fire them in the boxes like there going out of fashion ;)

I used those ikea boxes last time I went traveling, stored in the attic and all was good except a yellowed NES when I reopened them 2 years later :(

The main thing is to be sure there's no humidity nor extreme temperatures in the room you'll be storing the games/consoles/accessories.

Other than that, the solution you have in mind with the Ikea boxes sounds good. The only thing you'll probably find after 2 years is that your controllers with rubber sticks (ie.: Gamecube) will be very sticky, although after a bit of cleaning and using them again it's gone.

I have my whole collection (bar 3DS & WiiU, and stuff I bought here) in boxes in my home country since late 2014 - one thing I did when I went back last year was re-pack everything into smaller boxes, and ID them and have a list with the contents of each box, plus dimensions and weight in case I ever want to get something specific shipped here.

I am terrified of opening the boxes next time I'm back :pac:

Yeah the room is out of direct sunlight and like I say a new build so should be well insulated. Will store them away from radiators and the likes.

Or we'll look after them, save on rent, just make a list of who minds what, and we promise not to sell them on when they can make us money on Ebay!
