Aqua Jogging Etiquette - National Aquatic Centre (or anywhere for that matter)...

    Due to a running injury, I will be heading out to the National Aquatic Centre on a regular basis for the next while to do some prescribed aqua jogging.

    What's the proper etiquette for aqua jogging?

    How do I avoid pi$$ing off lap swimmers?

    And what do normal swimmers do when there's a jogger in the lane?

    ps. Actually, can anyone confirm if they sell belts there too?

    Ideally don't jog in a swim lane, you are really going to piss off swimmers who are training. You are going to have swimmers coming up behind you who wont see you until quite late and there will be collisions. In a properly managed pool the lifeguard should pull joggers from swim lanes. If you can do the jogging outside of the designated swim lanes or head to the pool when its not set up in lanes that would be preferable. If you really have no choice then only jog in the designated slow lane.

    If you're based in South Dublin you can head to DLR pools and use their "public" terms to run in "community lane" which is essentially for people just getting wet, not swimming (including kids) - I've seen couple of joggers already so you wouldn't be the first ;) (p.s. I don't know if you can borrow/buy weights there though)

    It turned out to be a bit of a waste of time. When the NAC pool is set up for open swim, they open two pools either side of the 25m lanes. Unfortunately, these are only 1m deep, which isn't deep enough for aqua jogging.

    One of the 25m lanes did come free at one point but I was conscious that I could be interfering with swim training (even though aqua jogging is currently pretty vital to my training too!).

    I asked a couple of the lifeguards and at the desk about whether there were many people doing aqua jogging but they didn't seem to think anyone did it in the competition pool. I've seen so many references to sportspeople doing aqua jogging at the NAC during rehab that I thought they would have been more familiar with the idea or even made some provision for it (it is an aquatic pursuit after all!).

    I'll try again in the Ballymun pool tomorrow!

    To be honest aqua jogging in a swim lane is like someone doing press ups on a running track. Unless you have a lane to yourself you will getting in people's way. I've seen a few aqua joggers in my local pool, but they limit themselves to the unroped section of the pool (when that's availsble). Usually sharing with families at the shallow end, joggers at the deep.

    I'd ask your local pool for times they have sections unroped and go then. Or there's always the sea ;)

    Yeah, it would have been fine if the unroped pools were deeper than 1m. I suppose I thought that there might be some provision for, or at least more familiarity with, athletes doing rehab at the aquatic centre but it's not a big deal.

    btw how high are you? Isn't 1m enough to cover you above belly which should be more than enough, right...

    For non-impact aqua jogging (which is what I need to do), my feet shouldn't be touching the pool floor so, when the belt goes around my waist, I think the theory is that I should be lifted and the water should be sufficiently deep so that I don't touch the ground. I'm just over 6ft in height.

    I have done aqua jogging previously where your feet do touch the ground but, for my current injury, that's not recommended.

    If you head out to the nac for after 9pm weekdays, you'll highly likely get a lane in the deep pool free. Also don't be afraid to do the aqua aerobics in the slow lane out there.
