Does Saorview have a built in TV guide similar to the Horizon interface?

Yes. A Saorview compatible TV or box will give you a 7 day guide.
Be aware Saorview is only the Irish channels compared to pay TV. For FTA (Free-To-Air) UK channels, BBC, ITV, CH4 etc, you would need a satellite dish and box unless you live near the border or some parts of the East coast.

Ya I know it's a bit limited channel-wise. So, if I have a set-top box recorder, can it be programmed to record from the TV guide?

Make sure the set top box you get has a hard drive in it or an optional USB port so you can set up to record. Also if you want to record one and watch one make sure you get a box with two sat input connections-Same as a sky+ box basically.

If you have a Saorview approved tv, you could possibly connect a USB/hardrive to the tv and set recordings for upto seven days on the saorview/tv programme guide.

Then you could also get a Freesat humax hdr box for satellite/English channels which can also set recordings for upto seven days, serial link and record two programmes at the same time.

An excellent setup, easy for all the family to use.

I thought the only off-the-shelf saorview approved recorder was the walker set top box but it seems to do all those things. Doubtful about getting freesat because I live in an apartment block but I'm hoping being in Dublin city centre opposite four courts that I'll be able to get good indoor signal.

The Walker PVR is the only approved Saorview PVR on the market, it had lots of issues which were reported here on boards over the years but these appear to have been resolved with software updates. It's available from Powercity now for under €85.

Saorview will be launching a new series of connected receivers in the coming months with Manhattan the rumoured manufacturer.

Sorry, I thought you could also get Freesat.
If it's only for Saorview, as the Cush has mentioned the Saorview pvr box in powercity is your best bet.
It's a great price and may not be kept in stock for long.
I would imagine the Saorview Connect pvr box (serial link and record two programmes at the same time) will be alot more expensive on launch.

Any idea when it is expected to launch? I was digging in search and all indications suggest it should have been launched already

Total noob here, but also thinking of moving away from pay tv, and moving to FTA. I tried looking through the applicable thread, but got confused - this thread seems more at my level.

Can anyone recommend a particular box, good tech, reliable, decent storage, FTA / Saorview intergration? ANything else I should be aware of?

The new Saorview Connect receivers in development might be a solution but they're not available yet.

There are other enthusiast combi sat/terrestrial receivers such as the Amiko Alien, Ferguson Ariva 153 etc. out there, there are threads on them here in the forum.
