Does Saorview aeriel need much more height than a SkyDish

I am looking at putting up a Saorview aeriel. However ... I don't want to put on
Chimney and drag cables through the roof.

I have a sky dish on back of house and was planning of putting the aeriel close to same. It is out of site and sits nicely on a blank wall etc

Does Saorview need big height for reception??? Does the signal come from same direction as Sky?

The aerial needs to point in the direction of your nearest Saorview mast. See here for more info. The height will depend on your location. Have a look at your neighbours for a clue but as a general rule, the higher the better.

    Many thanks ... Great link.

Looking at the list on Saorview.... The list of channels is disappointing.

Is it really worth the hassle... All that investment for a handful of channels

Probably concentrate on getting FreeSat channels thru my Sky aeriel

This is the only way to get the Irish channels without a subscription, they aren't available via Freesat.

    Not quite true

you can also RTE and TG4 by satellite. Saorsat.

But you need a special LNB because it runs at twice the frequency of the Freesat/SKY ones. And you need a solid dish, not one of those perforated SKY things. Really only for when you can't get saorview because of mountains or stuff.

If you have a SKY dish then just stick on a proper Freesat box if you want most of the feature from SKY like EPG, series link etc. Assuming the SKY dish is working and pointing the right way.

Any TV bought in the last few years down here should work with Saorview so all you need is a UHF only Aerial. No VHF, no rabbits ears , no FM , just UHF. Ignore the word digital on an aerial box, it's purely a marketing term as the conversion to digital takes place in the TV.

In answer to the original question, I've put a satellite dish on a paving slab but I'd recommend mounting TV aerials more than 5cm off the ground.

True but no TV3, 3e or UTV Ireland and a more expensive install option.

We just had the English free channels ourselves for a while at home from satellite, and it was grand.

Then when we had the money we invested in getting the Irish channels, as we did miss Irish news, programmes and sports.

It felt like just having English channels only all the time BBC/ITV etc, it was like living in England.

EUR 16 for an aerial, 6 for a combiner, 10 for a demux face plate

and an hour of your time?
Cheaper than a months subscription service to the same channels.
