    Please help me, boardsies! :(

I have bought a new DVD player (Akai A51002) with only one SCART output in the back.

I want to connect it to my Sky Box so that when in 'Sky' mode, I can simply press the 'power on' button on the Akai for DVD mode.

However when I connect to the back of the Sky Box using SCART leads, I can't.

To watch Sky, I have to remove the SCART lead from the back of the Akai.

The Sky Box has two SCART outputs - 'TV SCART' and 'VCR SCART'. The back of the TV has only one SCART output.

What am I doing wrong? Please help!

You must have the ancient white sky box. DVD out to VCR in and out of sky box to tv. Do not turn on DVD player as it overrides the sky output when watching sky. I used to have it that way about 10 years ago.

It is the old Panasonic Sky Box - is there any way to have the DVD player on with Sky on also?

why would you want dvd player on same time as sky if tv has only one scart?? you can buy a scart switcher. and you may havse sky in another room via rf.

I just don't want to leave a SCART lead hanging out - I just want to be able to turn the DVD power off, and Sky is on.

Where would I put the SCART splitter - what goes in where?

damien gave the answer, run the scart lead from the dvd to the vcr input on sky box and then scart from tv out on sky box to scart on tv, the dvd passes through the sky box when sky box is on standby ie off by remote.

So when dvd is powered on sky box is off and when sky is on dvd is off.

unless you have sky in another room you dont need a switcher.

    Not happening :(

When Sky Box is on standby, DVD player mode not working (all SCART leads are attached as you said)

now that is strange. its possible that you need sky box on first and then power on the dvd, the dvd may then grab the tv av channel and work.

But first make sure that scart control in the sky box is set to on, go services, system setup, picture settings, select, arrow down to scart control and then use left arrrow to turn on, then arrow down to save settings, press select.

Tried that, still the same :(

When the SCART is put back into the DVD, the Akai logo appears meaning the DVD is ready to go. But I still don't get Sky until I have taken the SCART lead out the back of the AKAI - even when I press the 'standby' button on the DVD.

That is a mystery, are you sure you have scart from dvd to vcr on sky box?? and maybe you could try with scart control set to off as well.

That is a very old method for connecting stuff and my mind is rusty.

here is a link for a switcher, the idea is you plug lead from switcher into tv and then pluf leads from sky and dvd into switcher. There is usually a button marked 1 and 2 and you 3 press button for one you want.

    3 way scart switch

this works as I had it and it was ace. I may still have it so depending where you are i can eeetc

Thanks amigo, I've purchased the box - I'll let you know how it goes. That could be the solution :)

First of all if you have the option of using HDMI do so. A €1.50 Dealz HDMI cable will completely wipe scart for quality.

If you had an option for component then try that - does the TV have red, green , blue connectors ?

Next does the TV take composite or SHVS ?
These are yellow connectors, you can get cables from SCART to these.

Now on to the tricky stuff.
Older SKY boxes have an RF output that you can tune the TV to. Not great quality but handy for running a small TV in another room. not worth considering unless you mostly watch DVDs

Try different SCART cables. Pin 8 is the one that is supposed to tell other devices if there is video present , it mostly works. Try snipping it if all else fails on a cable (!) and thenryig it in both positions .

Check the output from the DVD player / SKY Box - RGB or CVBS might make a difference but usually that's about when the colour goes or you get ghosting or rolling.

Note some SKY boxes aren't the best behaved on HDMI if you enable CEC, use a cheap 3 way switch (or very old cable) to isolate pin 13.

All sorted now, purchased a 2-way SCART switch box - Welsh Megaman is happy!

    Thanks all :)
