Advice on new laptop

    Hi,

Just looking for some advice on getting a new laptop. I'm a bit clueless.

Need one for basic work stuff and also good for streaming videos from netflix and wwe network.

The only game I'd really like to play on it is Football manager.

A screen size of 15.6" would do

I would have a budget of around €800

Was looking at this laptop in currys and was wondering would it fulfill my needs or would there be anything for a similar price that would be better?

    http://www.currys.ie/Product/hp-envy-15ah150sa-156-laptop-silver/335330/401.0.0

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks

Actually I was just wondering as well - What would be the cheapest laptop that could play more powerful games like COD etc? I wouldnt mind going up a few hundred for a better laptop.

    Thanks

I don't know much about computers bud but what I do know is (i) stay away from AMD processors and (ii) PCWorld is a complete rip-off and you're better buying online. As far as Football Manager and steaming is concerned an i3 laptop circa €400 would do the job no worries. More gaming centric laptops are not something I'd know about I couldn't tell the difference between one graphics card and another maybe someone else can help. But for €800 you should get a decent laptop.

    Appreciate the reply mate, thanks.

Would you have any idea if this would do the job - http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/5092109.htm

Do you need it to be a laptop where are you going to be doing the gaming, you could get a cheap laptop and build yourself a decent gaming pc within your budget, you can use a steam link to stream the games to any room in the house.

Under 1000 probably something like this, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-GL551JW-WH71-4720HQ-2-6-3-6GHz-Windows/dp/B015QZVA6G?ie=UTF8&tag=

    Thanks for the 2 replies.

Sorry, I probably got ahead of myself saying maybe I should go for a gaming laptop. Really the only games I would be playing would be basic stuff like Football manager, Sim city etc. Also streaming sites like netflix and wwe network to work smoothly would be a must.

Weight and size doesn't really matter. Don't mind if it's too big or small. Ill be using it mainly in the house.

There is nothing wrong with AMD processors once you check cpubenchmark.net to make sure they perform okay. If you want a good laptop it might be an idea to make sure it has a graphics card, hd 1080p screen and sshd or ssd (hard drives are the bottleneck on many modern computers).

Not great and definitely won't play COD etc. Neither will this but if you just wanted to stream and play Football Manager it's a good deal. You could always build a gaming PC like DrunkMonkey said.

Check out the Asus N551VW you could get lucky in amazon warehouse and get one under 800, there's one there now but condition doesn't sound good but with amazon you can just send it back for free if it's not up to scratch.
The Asus would play Grand theft Auto for you no bother, https://www.asus.com/ie/Notebooks/N551VW/

An SSD will give you the snappy feel you want from a laptop and a dedicated graphics card is what you need for gaming. The graphics card you can't change so you should be looking for the best one you can afford. You can buy and SSD yourself and fit it in 15 minutes so I wouldn't worry about it having one.

This laptop would probably do you, works out about 650 http://www.ebuyer.com/737835-msi-cx62-2qd-gaming-laptop-9s7-16j322-425

It's not a great spec for a gaming laptop but a lot better than the crap you'll get in argos, pc world etc.

This is at the top end of your budget, but it does have some nice specs
i5, hybrid ssd drive, 1TB of standard HDD storage, a full HD screen and a 2GB dedicated graphics card

That's really bad value for money.

For €800 you are in GTX960M territory, a 940M at that price point is crazy. It can't play most new games even at low settings.

    Check out PC Specialist website.

Are you for real? The same specs on the PC specialist website are over 800e. If you want the 960m you are closer to 1k..

Am I for real? Says the guy who recommended an €850 laptop that can barely struggle through the latest games at lowest possible settings and resolution, and has a ULV processor to boot?

Here's a brand new laptop with a GTX960M with 2 year warranty for 700 delivered. There are loads like it elsewhere on ebay from european sellers, also.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,119 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

That's good for €700, probably struggle to get better at that price point.

That laptop is coming up as E730 for me and E40 for delivery.

Where is everyone seeing E700 delivered?

Thanks again everyone for the help.

Would you believe the price literally changed in that short time I posted it, it was €670. However, it's still an excellent price even at 730. You won't get better at that price - unless you go second hand, and even then you'd be hard pressed.

Completely forgot I have a £100 Amazon voucher that I got at Christmas so was looking on there!

Would this be any use? - https://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-6QC-037UK-15-6-Inch-i5-6300HQ-GeForce/dp/B01BY8LG0O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1464535356&sr=8-1&keywords=msi+laptop

Or anything else on there that would be worth getting? Don't mind going over budget seeing as though I have the voucher to use.

    Thanks

    Also spotted this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Specialist-Cosmos-VT15-950-Notebook-Black/dp/B01DJGUQ6Y/ref=sr_1_7?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1464540210&sr=1-7&keywords=cosmos+iv

I know PC specialist have a good rep but not sure what this is like?

As I say I don't mind going over my budget because I have a voucher.

I'd be looking at the Asus Rog series on Amazon before the MSI

    Found this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-Notebook-i7-4720HQ-GeForce-Windows/dp/B00Y0LX3BS/ref=sr_1_9?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1464545362&sr=1-9&keywords=asus+rog

After I use my voucher it would come to around E900. A bit over budget but wouldn't mind if it's worth it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

That's close to 1100, which is mad for a laptop of that spec. In that price range you should look at GTX960M, can be gotten for cheaper than that. You might as well get as decent a GPU now as you can.

Sorry guys you must be sick of me asking questions at this stage.

Would it be cheaper to get a gaming PC instead? The more I think about it, the computer will mainly be in the same spot and I won't really be moving it.

Yea build your own gaming PC it's not that hard and get a steam link for playing on any screen in the house. Any €299 laptop will do what you want bar gaming. None of the laptops mentioned here are capable of running an oculus rift or HTC Vive, you might not want one now but will in the future.
