For the purpose of payscale increments, the first three years service is disregarded. You'd be starting on the second point of the scale.

Does anyone know if a Clerical Officer from the public service 'common recruitment pool' ie local authority is appointed to Civil service, would they go to the equivalent point on the pay scale or start from the bottom?

my question exactly....I got offered the civil service previously and was only offered the first point of the scale. I even appealed it and lost.

I have over 10 years experience in the pool and am a currently employed in the pool.

what point would I be placed on if I was successful

    Hi everyone,

This is the latest guidance on pay for public sector workers joining the civil service: http://hr.per.gov.ie/starting-pay-on-recruitment/

Effectively the above guidance means that you can take your pay across if you are in an equivalent grade in the public sector.

    Good to know. Thanks

Yup, if you're currently working in the public sector go with that. My above advice regarding the three year disregard meant people who had resigned from the civil service.

If you're grade whatever in the HSE and moving across, completely different than a CO / EO who resigned in 2006 and is now back in and looking for previous service to be taken into account.

An addendum, consult HR about increments once you get the job....worst they can do is say no.

Hi there, I'm just wondering if your previous service was taken into account in the end?

please dont laugh when i ask this but im 15 years in the local authority on analagous grade 3 - does this count as being in the public service????
The reason i ask is my boss is telling me it doesnt :( and that my 15 years will count for nothing if i get offered a position in the civil service - im beyond gutted if this is the case

eh hello I would love to hear the answer to that too...I am 14 years as Grade III. Why would anyone laugh

Well Iv been digging all morning and it’s safe to say if I’m offered a post In The civil service I will take it safe in the knowledge my service will be recognised!!! However from experience it’s not the same in the lines of the HSE. (My grade is awkward as is my pay scale).
Not only that but I will probably never work for the local authority again.
Some might laugh because my boss makes you feel stupid all the time!

excellent news. I know I am lucky to have a public service permanent job and it means a pay cut if I do get the civil service position but the prospect of moving to where I want to live beats everything.

Yes I may have to take a cut BUT there is so much more room for movement shall we say. Ex colleagues of mine that left the local authority to take positions in the civil service have within 4 years got 2 promotions. No such chance in my department

totally agree. No transfer or promotion oppertunities where I am and Dublin (where I am) is too expensive

Well my colleague has been offered an EO post in the civil service after giving 10 years service in the local authority - the civil service are refusing to recognise her service and want her to start at the bottom of the scale

Hi all, again apologies is this is a very silly question! I am currently living in the UK, but have an interview in a few weeks for a Grade iii post back home. After 8 years across the pond I am desperate to move home and am grateful for the interview - impossible to get back before I left for London during the crash. My question is does work experience count at all for these positions, I have some temporary clerical officer experience (Irish) from back in 2008, and since then have worked as a secondary teacher in the UK along with a few years office experience. Obviously like all the rest of you guys I would really hope this would count for something in the pay scales but going by the conversations on here maybe not...any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks and best wishes.

You need to know the competencies and have lots of examples of how you met them

I'd imagine you'd be starting at the very first point on the CO scale which is a little over 23k.

Would be 99% on this, regardless of your experience in other non-Irish public sector roles. Anyone entering the Public service after 2010 is classed as a new entrant and must start on the first point of the relevant grade I believe.
