Payola

One of the national stations is pumped into our office. I've been on since 7 this morning and I've endured "Handclap" by something called Fitz and the Tantrums for the fourth time in 9 hours. It's truly awful stuff. I had a look at the charts and, funnily enough, as of today, it's not in IRMA's top 100 singles (though http://www.hotmusiccharts.com/ie/itunes/100 puts it at a lowly number 83 in a list of "Ireland's iTunes Top 100 songs")

Just wondering if anyone (preferably someone who works or has experience in radio) can explain why a song that, one the basis of today's charts, doesn't appear to be very popular, is getting such a heavy rotation? Is it just old fashioned payola? Is that legal here? I know in the US, the stations must explicitly state if their showcased bands have "payed to play" but they got around this years using so-called independent promoters (essentially middle-men between the labels and the stations) Just curious - it's 17.20 and I'm just putting down some time before I go homeward for the weekend!

    Which station is it?

Never heard the song. Could possibly be some sort of token Irish song of the week? Was it actually 4 times in 9 hours because that's poor rotation really.

I'm guessing that you heard this song either on Spin or iRadio or Beat. These stations work on a basis of playing as much new music that suits their format as possible. If the feedback is good the more popular tracks will go on heavy rotation with a view to breaking new hits to the listener.

Anoying though the songs may be but they will be gone in 2 weeks time only to be replaced with something equally numbing. Or it could be worse; it could end up being played on 98, Q or FM104 for 20 years as well :)
