I switched insurance last yr from AXA to liberty. Liberty had allowed me 4 yrs no claims discount as that's what AXA put on the letter(even though I only was driving 3 yrs). I've flagged it with liberty and there answer is they just go by whats on the letter. This yr they now offering me 5 yrs discount and when I queried it with AXA yday the girl told me they would still have to stand over it as the proof of no claims driving is a legal document. Would this be true should the worse case scenario happen?

If they accepted a 4 year bonus last year as it was issued by AXA and have issued you with a 5 year one this year then you are 100% safe.

Is it a case perhaps that before you had your own policy that you were a named driver on another policy so they (AXA) gave you the benefit of a one year intro?

Either way it doesn't matter. They issued you with the documents so legally have to stand over it.

I got my full Irish license earlier this month. I am an immigrant and I was on a provisional for two years. When I moved to Ireland and bought a car, I had full no-claims bonus based on my American driving history (5 years was the max NCB for that company). So when I switched companies this week, I expected to receive a letter for 5 years plus 2 years of no claims on my provisional, but to my surprise the letter said I had nine years no claims. The new insurance company accepted that; the rep who took my call had to ask someone about whether I could have NCB based on non-Irish history, but evidently there's no issue and I got it again, for a really significant discount.
