Paying for MRI scan results

I saw a consultant recently regarding an issue I'm having with tinnitus (ringing in the ear). He said there was nothing he could do, gave me a leaflet and charged me €150 for the privilege. He also referred me for an MRI as a precaution to rule something out (can't remember what exactly).

I went for the scan and he now wants me to go back for another appointment in 3 months that'll cost €100 this time. I called up and they said he just calls back everyone regardless of the results. So basically he wants to charge me €100 to look at my results.

I'm wondering what I'm entitled to here without paying again (I'm not happy with the service I've had from this guy so don't want to give him more money)? Can I ask him to give me a yes/no answer regarding whether the results are good or not without an appointment?

Do you have private healthcare? if so you can usually claim some of the costs back ...

if not your not entitled to anything he isn't obliged to tell you the results over the phone although i wish they would! you can also claim back 20% of the cost via your med 1 form at the end of the year but that's it really.

Yeah I have private medical insurance, I just really resent having to go back if there's nothing wrong. Surely if there was something wrong they're obliged to tell me?

I appreciate how you feel but I think you are being a bit unreasonable.

You say you paid him 150 euro for the privilege of him telling you there was nothing he could do. Would you have been happy to pay the money if he HAD found something he could treat? You paid for a consultation, you got a consultation. I never understand the attitude of resenting paying if the consultant cant do anything.

If you dont want to pay to see him again then dont and request your radiology report from wherever did the MRI. You can probably google the terms on it.

Alternatively ask them to send it to your GP and ring and ask your GP what it says.

    Great thanks, I'll try that
