    Hi lads
Just wondering what would lads consider manageable for a part time dairy farm as in working local and maybe getting a lad in for a morning or two or is part time dairy more or less impossible

Did it for 5 years. Was fine til family expanded and became a pure drain so gave up cows this year and stuck with job and have drystock now. Don't know myself.

Do it here milking 50, father works part time, me full ,very easily managed. We both have our jobs, his main job is milking , mine is ai,grass/feeding everything else then is split accordingly. Wouldn't like to be at fulltime job and cows on my own tho especially at current prices.Couldn't see much of a life outside it unless you'd have a seriously good setup.

Can be done but it all depends on the job. I used to do some relief milking for a lad he was a teacher his wife was a teacher and milking 60 cows a serious set up lovely people they use love the cows more than the kids I used think but unfortunately he got ill and cows was the first to go and my handy number with it.

How about once a day, it's always been a problem to keep ssc under control in any herds I experienced trying it, but for working off farm it would be a great model.

Plenty of lads doing it round here.

Simplicity is the key and someone you trust to do some jobs when you can't be around.

Compact spring calving, good simple housing, good fencing, water supply and roads, calves gone early, possibly not keeping replacements just using a beef bull/beef AI, buy in replacements calved.

But you have to love it to stay going because it is a drain on your time and weekends will be spent spreading fert, moving fences, dosing calves etc etc.

    But it is possible.

Only suitable for slaves. Or a workaholic. Or if you didn't get on with herself. ;)

It can be done, but you have no life outside the farm and job. Robot for the cows might be an option, but in a year like this the job would be paying for the robot:(

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

In this scenario the last bit is something that's a consequence not a cause of this sort of madness.
