    Hi all,

I want to register an irish (.ie) domain name and host name as part of an existing domain collection with my existing American hosting provider. In short, I do not need hosting on the Irish side.

Is Register.ie the best option for that? As a side note, i do live and work in Ireland now.

    Best,
    Ralf

That company are one of many accredited registrars, can't say I've ever heard of them before.

There's a full list (random order) here:

Digiweb/Digihost brand. Think it was inherited from Novara.

4 steps you need to do are outlined here by the IEDR

    https://www.iedr.ie/register-a-domain/how-to-register-a-ie-domain/

The main one is having the right documentation so unless you have a business name already that fits with the domain that will most likely be your first step. You need to register that through the cro.ie website. If you do have that part sorted then pick one of the accredited companies off the list and register the domain through them. Then just set the DNS to point to your American hosting provider once its setup.

So, if I am a private person and want to register hello-world dot ie (assuming that this one would still be available), that means I would need to register first a hello-world Ltd. or something therelike? Why can't a private person in Ireland, living in Ireland, not register hello-world dot ie right away? It worked for all the other countries I have been...

    Best,
    A.

Each domain registry has its own set of rules. The .ie rules are more restrictive than those of many other country code top level domains.

There's a fairly long, yet comprehensive, thread here that covers IE domains: http://www.boards.ie/b/thread/2056271832?
